West Long Branch, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Myles dropped in 28 points as the Rider Broncs took down the Monmouth Hawks, 89-83, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both clubs at the MAC.
Daniel Stewart added 21 points for the Broncs (3-4, 1-0 MAAC), while Jimmie Taylor finished with 15 points. Zedric Sadler chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the visitors.
For the Hawks (3-5, 0-1), Deon Jones led the way with 24 points, Justin Robinson scored 19 and Andrew Nicholas finished with 13.
Both squads shot well to start the game, with Monmouth hitting on 50 percent of its field goal tries, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Rider was close behind at 48.5 percent from the field and knocked down 8-of-15 from beyond the arc. After the teams traded leads in the early going, the Broncs finished the half on a 17-7 run and took a 42-35 lead into intermission.
In the second half, the teams continued to have success shooting the ball, with both connecting on 50 percent of their field goal attempts. After trailing for most of the half, the Hawks took a brief lead with less than nine minutes to play, but the Broncs answered with an 11-1 run and never trailed again, as they held on for the road victory.
The Broncs had the decided advantage at the free-throw line, outscoring the Hawks, 28-10. Monmouth had the edge down low, with a 34-28 advantage on points in the paint.
