Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Maodo Lo led the way with 23 points as the Columbia Lions downed the North Texas Mean Green as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the Chiles Center.
For the Lions (2-2), Grant Mullins added 18 points and eight rebounds.
Vertrail Vaughns led the Mean Green (2-2) with 18 points while Alzee Williams finished with 12 points and Jordan Williams chipped in with 11 points.
The Lions shot well to start the game, connecting on 52 percent of their field goal attempts in the first half, including 11-of-15 from beyond the 3-point arc, as they took a 39-29 lead into halftime. North Texas struggled from the floor early on, shooting just 36.4 percent from the field in the opening period including missing all five of its 3-point tries.
The Mean Green continued to have difficulty finding the basket after intermission, again shooting 36.4 percent from the field but did have more success from long range, making 5-of-11 from 3-point distance. Columbia cooled off somewhat, shooting 42.3 percent including just 1-of-7 from 3-point range in the second half. Columbia saw an 11-point lead with under three minutes to play shrink to just three with a minute remaining. The Mean Green had two chances to tie it in the final minute but 3-point tries by Vaughns and Brandon Walton were off the mark and the Lions were able to hold on for the victory.
The Lions outscored the Mean Green 36-15 from 3-point distance. North Texas did have the edge down low, scoring 30 points in the paint to just 22 by Columbia.
