GAME NOTES: The Elon Phoenix look to get back on track when they visit Timmons Arena for a Southern Conference matchup with the Furman Paladins.
Elon had its seven-game winning streak snapped in Thursday's 60-50 setback at Wofford. Still, the Phoenix sit atop the SoCon North Division standings by a two-game margin over second-place Appalachian State. The Phoenix's 15 wins already match last season's total, and the next victory will match the 1996-97 squad that finished 16-14.
Furman has not enjoyed such a program renaissance as the team is nine games below .500 and has dropped three of its last four outings. Most recently, the Paladins were on the wrong end of an 88-65 final against UNC Greensboro on Thursday. Tonight's tilt will wrap up the team's four-game homestand.
In the first meeting of the season between these two teams, Elon came away a 73-59 winner on Jan. 17. The Phoenix lead the all-time series, 9-4.
Elon had been in cruise control over the past three weeks, but Thursday's 50- point showing against Wofford marked a season-low in the scoring column. The Phoenix shot just 37.3 percent from the floor and even scuffled at the free- throw line, converting only 5-of-12 attempts (.417). After trailing at halftime, Wofford took control with a 52.2-percent shooting effort from the floor in the second half. Ryley Beaumont paced Elon with a game-high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds in the loss. Sebastian Koch and Lucas Troutman added 12 and 10 points, respectively. On the season, Troutman leads the team with 15.8 points per game to go along with 6.0 rebounds, and he is three blocks away from setting the school's all-time record. Jack Isenbarger is knocking down nearly three 3-pointers per game and is averaging 14.5 points, while Beaumont rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.3 points and a team-best 6.4 rebounds per tilt. That trio has been in the starting lineup for every game this season.
The offensive options are not quite as vast for Furman, as only Colin Reddick averages double figures with 12.5 ppg. Reddick, a 52-percent shooter from the floor, is also pulling down a team-best 6.2 rebounds per game. Colin's twin brother, Charlie, is second on the team with 9.7 points and 5.4 rebounds. The Paladins are -7.5 in scoring margin, -2.1 in rebounding margin, and -3.0 in turnover margin. The defense has been increasingly easy to score on over the past couple of weeks. In their last four games, the Paladins have allowed 61, 63, 74, 84 and 88 points. A couple of nights ago, they allowed UNCG to knock down 8-of-12 3-pointers and shoot 60.6 percent from the floor in the first half, as the Spartans built a comfortable 48-26 halftime lead and never looked back. Larry Wideman finished with 18 points off the bench in the loss.
Elon had a letdown on the offensive end of the floor on Thursday night, while Furman played very little defense. Look for the Phoenix to refocus and get back on track with a victory in this matchup.
