Bishop stands tall as Bolts blank Flames
Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Bishop stopped 19 shots for his fourth shutout of the season, as Tampa Bay topped Calgary, 2-0, at the Saddledome.
Ondrej Palat and Nikita Kucherov scored for the Lightning, who have won four of their last five games in southern Alberta since 2004.
Karri Ramo made 27 saves for the offensively-challenged Flames, who skidded to their fourth straight loss and eighth in the last nine.
Calgary has been blanked in three of its last four games, scoring just once in that span.
"We are wasting great goaltending performances," said Flames head coach Bob Hartley. "I thought we played a decent first period. We managed to stay in the game then a few bad penalties. The sad part of this is we killed them off and they got us a few seconds later so that put us right on our heels. As we all know we are a very fragile group right now."
Palat produced the game's first goal at 5:23 of the second period. Mark Barberio forced a Matt Stajan turnover along the left-wing boards and chipped the puck to Teddy Purcell, who fed his linemate for a successful high shot from the left wing.
Kucherov one-timed a Palat cross-ice feed past Ramo for a 2-0 game just after the midway point and the Lightning defense did the rest.
The visitors limited the Flames to six shots in the final 20 minutes, and a hooking call on Calgary defenseman Mark Giordano with 1:29 to play denied any hopes of a comeback for the hosts.
Tampa improved to 7-6-1 all-time in Calgary ... Palat extended his point streak to a career-best five games ... Bishop matched Boston's Tuukka Rask for the NHL lead in shutouts.
