Nets sign Collins for remainder of the season
Brooklyn, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Brooklyn Nets have signed center Jason Collins for the remainder of the season.
Collins first joined the Nets on Feb. 23 with a 10-day contract and signed a second 10-day deal on March 5. He has appeared in eight games this season and has compiled five points with six rebounds and six steals.
The 35-year-old veteran became the first openly gay active player in one of North America's four major team sports when he took the floor for a Feb. 23 game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Collins revealed his sexuality nearly 11 months ago in an article he co-wrote for Sports Illustrated.
The 7-footer previously played for the New Jersey Nets from 2001-08 and was a member of two NBA Finals teams. The Stanford product has averaged 3.6 points and 3.7 rebounds in 721 career games.
