Toronto Raptors 2013 Draft Preview

By Jim Brighters, NBA Editor

(Sports Network) - Masai Ujiri's first draft night at the helm of the Toronto Raptors should be a quiet one. The Raptors don't own a single pick on Thursday night.

That won't stop Ujiri from trying to do something.

Ujiri won the Executive of the Year award this season, although he was in charge of the Denver Nuggets. That team won 57 games and finished as the third seed in the Western Conference.

Don't expect anything like that in Toronto next season.

The Raptors finished four games out of the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race last season. They made a huge splash, acquiring Rudy Gay before the deadline.

Their core unit is sold with Gay, DeMar DeRozan, Kyle Lowry, Andrea Bargnani, Jonas Valanciunas, Amir Johnson and Terrance Ross. Alan Anderson emerged as a great shooting bench player, but he's a restricted free agent.

The Raptors will probably take calls on Bargnani. He hasn't lived up to his No. 1 pick status and is their most tradable commodity.

Ujiri built Denver's roster with athleticism and George Karl molded it into an awesome offensive team. This Raptors group was put together by Bryan Colangelo, who created the Phoenix Suns high-flying group in the mid-2000s. Ujiri would seem like a good fit to refine this group.

He already decided to keep Dwane Casey as head coach.

It's just a shame his first draft will see him watching from the war room.
