Description: Mike Aviles' first career grand slam couldn't have come at a better time. It broke a scoreless tie in the ninth inning Sunday against Detroit.
Insight: The four-run blast was Aviles' only hit of the afternoon. The Cleveland third baseman has now homered in two of his last four outings. Despite his recent power surge, Aviles doesn't play often enough to be a legitimate fantasy option (just 306 at bats).

7/4/2013 12:10:00 PM
Description: Indians infielder Mike Aviles is starting at shortstop Thursday with Asdrubal Cabrera at DH.
Insight: Aviles is 7-for-21 (.333) with two homers against Royals starter James Shields.

2/7/2013 4:12:00 PM
Description: The Indians have reached an agreement with infielder Mike Aviles on a new two-year, $6 million contract.
Insight: Aviles had been eligible for arbitration but it never came to that. He had his moments last year with the Red Sox, producing 13 homers and a .250 average in 136 games. Aviles should find his way onto many fantasy rosters next season thanks to his positional flexibility (eligible at shortstop, second base and third).

11/3/2012 6:29:00 PM
Description: Toronto traded shortstop Mike Aviles to Cleveland for relief pitcher Esmil Rogers.
Insight: That was quick. Aviles didn't last two weeks with the Blue Jays. He spent the 2012 season with Boston but was traded to Toronto earlier this offseason as part of the John Farrell trade.

10/21/2012 10:29:00 AM
Description: The Red Sox have sent shortstop Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays in exchange for manager John Farrell.
Insight: It looks like the Red Sox have found their new skipper. Aviles (.250, 13 HR, 60 RBI) will compete with Yunel Escobar (.253, 9 HR, 51 RBI) for Toronto's starting shortstop job in spring training.

8/19/2012 7:19:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles will be on the sidelines for Sunday night's contest against New York.
Insight: Aviles (.255, 11 HR, 52 RBI) has now missed three of Boston's last four games, so it seems he's fallen out of favor with manager Bobby Valentine. Aviles emerged as a low-risk, high reward fantasy option earlier in the year but now he's just simply not playing enough to warrant a spot on any fantasy rosters.

8/16/2012 4:03:00 PM
Description: Boston shortstop Mike Aviles won't be in the starting lineup Thursday night against Baltimore.
Insight: Aviles (.252, 11 HR, 52 RBI) exploded for three hits Sunday in Boston's blowout win over the Indians but so far he has struggled against the Orioles (0-for-8 in the first two games of the series).

8/3/2012 6:02:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles is back in the starting lineup for Friday night's contest versus Minnesota. Aviles missed five consecutive games earlier this week while dealing with turf toe.
Insight: Almost all of his production this season came during April and May (.264, 8 HR, 32 RBI in the first two months, .226, 2 HR, 19 RBI since) so fantay owners shouldn't get too excited about Aviles' return.

8/1/2012 5:09:00 PM
Description: Boston shortstop Mike Aviles will miss his fourth game in a row Wednesday against the Tigers. He's still battling turf toe.
Insight: It remains to be seen whether or not Aviles' injury is serious enough to land him on the DL. For now, the Red Sox will continue to employ hot-hitting Pedro Ciriaco (.348, 0 HRs, 9 RBIs) at shortstop in Aviles' place.

7/30/2012 7:04:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles, still struggling with turf toe, will be out of the lineup again on Monday.
Insight: Aviles played Saturday against New York, but he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and overall he is hitless in his last 11 at bats. If Aviles (.252, 10 HRs, 51 RBIs) is forced to go on the disabled list, his replacement Pedro Ciriaco (.349, 0 HRs, 8 RBIs) could become an interesting fantasy option.

7/21/2012 5:26:00 PM
Description: Boston shortstop Mike Aviles is dealing with turf toe and isn't in the lineup Saturday.
Insight: Turf toe is a common injury among football players and it has a tendency to linger. Even if Aviles doesn't require a trip to the disabled list he still can expect to have to play through pain for awhile.

Hot7/7/2012 10:02:00 AM
Description: Boston shortstop Mike Aviles is a career .563 hitter (9-for-16) against Yankees starter Freddy Garcia.
Insight: Aviles (.266, 9 HR, 43 RBI) has always been a second-half hitter and could become a solid fantasy contributor if the trend continues. His career second-half batting average is .319 with an OPS of .805. The OPS figure is 126 points better than before the break.

7/1/2012 2:59:00 PM
Description: Boston shortstop Mike Aviles has been scratched from the Red Sox's starting lineup on Sunday because of an illness.
Insight: Aviles (.266, 9 HRs, 43 RBIs) enters Sunday's action just one homer shy of matching his career high set back in 2008 when he was a member of the Kansas City Royals.

6/25/2012 6:52:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles is not in the starting lineup for Monday night's matchup with Toronto.
Insight: Aviles (.262) crushed eight homers in the season's opening two months but since the beginning of June, he has only gone deep once.

6/10/2012 10:48:00 AM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against Washington.
Insight: Aviles (.263) has been stuck on eight homers since May 20th and is batting just .246 in the month of June. Nick Punto (.180, 1 HR, 5 RBIs) will start in his place today.

Hot5/20/2012 8:52:00 PM
Description: Mike Aviles clobbered another homer Sunday in Boston's 5-1 win over the Phillies. Aviles has now homered in each of his last three games.
Insight: During Aviles's current six-game hitting streak he is batting .400 with 3 HRs and 6 RBIs. It's tough to find a better fantasy shortstop than Aviles this season. He leads all big-league shortstops in RBI with 27 and only Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy has more homers than Aviles's eight.

5/18/2012 10:16:00 PM
Description: Mike Aviles went 2-for-4 with a solo home run against the Phillies on Friday.
Insight: Aviles went into a nosedive at the end of April and into May as a 5-for-37 (.135) swoon dropped his average from .324 to .257. Since then, he's gone 16-for-52 (.307), including 7-for-15 (.467) in the last four games.

5/11/2012 5:44:00 PM
Description: Mike Aviles is not in Friday's lineup for Boston.
Insight: Aviles has started 25 games in a row for the Red Sox, so he's likely just getting a day off. The shortstop has followed a 2-for-19 stretch by going 8-for-27 (.296) in the past five games.

Cold5/6/2012 10:26:00 AM
Description: Mike Aviles is back in the leadoff spot in the order on Sunday after hitting fifth on Saturday.
Insight: Aviles is 2-for-19 in his last four games to drop his average to .257 after a hot 15-game stretch during which Aviles had five homers and 14 RBIs.

5/5/2012 10:32:00 AM
Description: Mike Aviles will bat fifth for Boston on Saturday as Ryan Sweeney moves to leadoff, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.
Insight: Aviles has been excelling in the leadoff spot, but with Kevin Youkilis out perhaps manager Bobby Valentine thinks his shortstop will be better suited in the five-hole. Aviles' average dropped to .267 with an 0-for-5 night on Friday, but he still has five homers, 19 RBIs and three steals. Moving to the fifth spot could give him more RBI opportunities as he'll be hitting behind Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Adrian Gonzalez, but his run total is likely to drop some if he stays there.
