American League Preview from The Sports Network

Sunday, July 28th (All times Eastern)

Minnesota Twins (45-56) at Seattle Mariners (49-55), 4:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Minnesota - Kyle Gibson (2-2, 5.72) Seattle - Erasmo Ramirez (1-0, 8.71)

(Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners will attempt to even the series as they host the Minnesota Twins at Safeco Field in the concluding matchup of a four-game set.

Samuel Deduno threw seven scoreless innings as the Twins blanked the Seattle Mariners, 4-0, in the third game of the series on Saturday. Justin Morneau and Brian Dozier each had a home run for Minnesota, which has won two of three in this series and eight of its last 11 overall.

Chris Colabello has hit safely in all three games of the series and also launched his first career home run in the top of the 13th inning Friday to lift the Twins to a 3-2 victory.

"They were swinging and missing -- and then looking back not knowing where the pitches were coming from," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire of Deduno's performance in the third game of the series. "His ball has a lot of movement. Guys don't like to face him."

Gardenhire will hope to get the same type of pitching performance out of Kyle Gibson in the series finale. Gibson is making just the fifth start of his career after pitching well against the Angels in a no-decision on Tuesday, surrendering only five hits and two earned runs over six innings of work. The 25-year old righty has never faced Seattle before in his career.

Seattle will send Erasmo Ramirez to the hill as it tries to avoid a third consecutive setback. Ramirez collected his first win of the season on Tuesday as he went 5 2/3 innings with eight hits and three earned runs allowed to the Indians. The bullpen managed to hold Cleveland scoreless the rest of the way to give the young Nicaraguan pitcher the decision.

After scoring eight runs in the series opener, Seattle has not been able to get much going offensively. The hosts were limited to just six hits and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position in Saturday's loss. The newly added Humberto Quintero made his debut behind the plate for the Mariners on Saturday after multiple injuries to the team's catching corps.

"Unfortunately we've got a lot of guys hurt, but you have to use what you have to use," Henry Blanco said. "We're just trying to stay strong and keep winning some ballgames; that's what we need right now."

The lack of chemistry between Quintero and his pitchers was evident as Seattle walked eight Twins on Saturday, including one for a run.

Minnesota has won six of the 10 meetings between these clubs this season, but Seattle has won 10 of the last 16 encounters.
