National League Game Summary - San Diego at Miami
(Saturday, April 5th)
Final Score: Miami 5, San Diego 0
Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Giancarlo Stanton drove in two runs and Jose Fernandez fired 6 2/3 scoreless innings as the surging Miami Marlins took care of the San Diego Padres, 5-0, on Saturday in the middle test of a three-game set from Marlins Park.
Fernandez (2-0) dazzled in his second start of the season, allowing just five baserunners while striking out eight. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year has allowed just a run with 17 strikeouts through 12 2/3 innings this season.
"That's who I am, I like to keep pitching," Fernandez said of getting pulled in the seventh. "I'm feeling great. The bullpen did a great job like always."
Stanton was one of four Marlins with two hits, with Derek Dietrich and Christian Yelich both posting two hits and an RBI. Miami improved to 5-1 on the young season.
Andrew Cashner (0-1) went six innings for the Padres, scattering five hits and three walks while surrendering two runs.
"I thought I threw the ball real well," said Cashner. "I had a couple of walks that could have gone either way."
Both starters struck out four over the first two innings, yielding just a hit apiece. San Diego threatened first, loading the bases on Fernandez in the third inning with just one out, but the young righty induced a 4-6-3 double play on the first pitch he threw to Seth Smith to escape the inning unscathed.
Miami broke through with a run in the third. With two on and two outs, Stanton smacked a sharp grounder that deflected off Chase Headley's glove at third and into left field, plating Fernandez. Fernandez reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the frame.
Dietrich's two-out single to right in the sixth inning plated Garrett Jones for a 2-0 Miami edge.
Fernandez left the game after Alexi Amarista struck out swinging but reached first on a wild pitch with two gone in the seventh inning. A.J. Ramos took his place on the hill and fanned Yasmani Grandal to preserve the 2-0 lead.
The Marlins put another run across in the seventh on a Stanton RBI double and added two more in the eighth. Facing reliever Joaquin Benoit, Reed Johnson brought a run in with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to left and Yelich slapped a single up the middle for a 5-0 margin.
Carlos Marmol allowed runners to reach second and third in the ninth, but Xavier Nady grounded out to second to end the game.
Miami has won five straight against San Diego dating back to last season ... Marlins leadoff man Adeiny Hechavarria entered the game batting 11-for-19 but failed to reach base in five at-bats ... The Padres went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base ... Miami's Nathan Eovaldi and San Diego's Ian Kennedy are set to take the hill in Sunday's series finale.
