Final Score: Arizona 3, Philadelphia 2
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Lyle Overbay doubled in two runs in the top of the ninth to lift the Diamondbacks over Roy Halladay and the Phillies, 3-2, in the first of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.
Justin Upton and Miguel Montero singled before Overbay doubled off Halladay to right-center.
Chase Utley's relay throw home was on-target but Collin Cowgill, who replaced Montero on the bases, dove over catcher Carlos Ruiz's left leg and touched the plate just before Ruiz was able to apply the tag.
"[Halladay] made a mistake in my last at-bat," Overbay said. "You know you're going to get a pitch to hit and you have to take advantage of it."
Bryan Shaw (1-0) earned his first career win after giving up one hit in a scoreless eighth, and J.J. Putz picked up his 30th save of the season after overcoming a leadoff walk in the ninth.
Halladay (15-5) was stellar despite giving up the lead in the ninth, fanning 14 in nine innings. But in allowing three runs on eight hits, he suffered his first home loss since falling to the Brewers on April 19. It was also the first time Halladay blew a ninth-inning lead since 2007.
"There was no discussion (to take Halladay out)," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "It was his game."
The Phillies took a 2-1 lead in the fifth following Shane Victorino's two-run blast. Jimmy Rollins singled to right before Victorino belted the 1-1 offering over the right-field wall.
In the seventh Halladay doubled and moved to third when Rollins grounded out to pitcher Josh Collmenter. But Collmenter was able to get Victorino to pop up before Joe Patterson came in to strike out Utley, stranding Halladay on third.
Arizona struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Chris Young singled, stole second and then scored when Overbay singled to right.
The Phillies blew an opportunity to score in the third. Halladay singled and Utley doubled with two outs before Howard walked to load the bases. But Collmenter was able to get Hunter Pence to chase a 3-2 pitch out of the zone to record the strikeout after an epic 11-pitch at bat.
Collmenter gave up two runs on eight hits and fanned eight in 6 2/3 innings.
Upton extended his hitting-streak to seven games... Arizona has 35 comeback wins this season...Prior to the game the Phillies held a ceremony to unveil a statue memorializing long-time broadcaster Harry Kalas...The Phillies lost for just the second time this season when leading after eight innings.
