Giants rally past Pirates in 13 innings

Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Hunter Pence scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 13th inning on Jared Hughes' throwing error to send the San Francisco Giants to an 11-10 triumph over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of a three-game series Monday at PNC Park.

Pence scored the tying run in the ninth on Buster Posey's single before working a one-out walk off Hughes in the 13th inning.

Hughes (1-1) then plunked Juan Perez before Jean Machi followed with a bunt down the third-base line. Hughes fielded the bunt cleanly, but his throw to first short-hopped first baseman Ike Davis and skipped high in the air, allowing Pence to race home for the deciding run.

Sergio Romo worked around a leadoff hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the frame to nail down his 10th save of the season, while Machi (5-0) picked up the win after spinning two scoreless innings in relief.

Pence finished 3-for-6 with four runs scored, Hector Sanchez had four hits and three RBI, and Posey supplied three hits, two RBI and scored three times for the Giants, who have won six straight and 10 of their last 11 games.

Pedro Alvarez launched a three-run homer and drove in four runs, while Andrew McCutchen collected four hits and scored twice for the Pirates, who have lost two straight and five of their last seven games.
