White Sox sign reliever Downs

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago White Sox continued their offseason bullpen makeover on Thursday, officially announcing a one-year agreement with free agent reliever Scott Downs.

Downs, who split the 2013 campaign with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Atlanta Braves, will earn $3.75 million for the upcoming season. The deal also includes a $4.25 million club option for 2015 with a $250,000 buyout.

The veteran left-hander ranks second among active southpaws in holds (166) and fifth in games pitched (564) and is coming off a solid 2013 season. Downs posted a 1.84 earned run average in 43 appearances with the Angels, then went 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA over 25 games after being traded to the Braves on July 29.

Downs owns a 38-36 record with a 3.48 ERA over 12 seasons in the majors, while holding left-handed hitters to just a .204 average since 2007.

The 37-year-old, who broke into the major leagues with the crosstown-rival Cubs in 2000, joins a Chicago bullpen that also added Ronald Belisario this offseason while trading closer Addison Reed to Arizona last month.

Left-handed pitcher Santos Rodriguez was designated for assignment to make room for Downs on the 40-man roster.
