Phillies use big first inning to down Padres
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Carlos Ruiz went 3-for-3 with three RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies took a 10-5 win over the San Diego Padres to wrap up three-game set.
Cesar Hernandez was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Jimmy Rollins added a pair of hits with two runs scored and an RBI for the Phillies, who have won five of their last six.
"Big offensive night," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said.
Roy Halladay started the game for the Phils, but he went just 4 1/3 innings and was charged with five runs -- four earned -- on four hits and five walks. Justin De Fratus (3-3) got the win for getting the final two outs of the fifth inning.
Tommy Medica had two hits and an RBI for the Padres, who dropped the final two games of this set after winning four in a row. Tyson Ross (3-8) was tagged for six runs on five hits and two walks while recording just two outs in the first inning.
"Their hitters just squared up and he couldn't get the one pitch to stop the damage," Padres manager Bud Black said of Ross.
Will Venable homered on the third pitch of the game to get the Padres on the board, but the Phillies came roaring back in the home half of the opening inning.
Singles from Hernandez, Rollins and Chase Utley to start the inning tied the contest. Ruiz then punched a two-run double to center. After Darin Ruf singled and Cody Asche walked to load the bases, the next two batters struck out. Halladay, though, worked a walk to force in a run and chase Ross from the game.
Anthony Bass took over and gave up a two-run double to Hernandez as the Phils took a 6-1 lead. Halladay was thrown out at home on the play to end the inning.
A bases loaded walk from Rollins in the third made it a 7-1 game.
San Diego got back in the game in the fifth. A bases loaded walk from Chase Headley was followed by a single from Medica, which scored two runs thanks in part to a bad throw from Halladay. Mark Kotsay's sac fly later in the frame made it a 7-5 contest.
The Phils, though, countered with a pair of runs in the fifth thanks to a sac fly from Utley and RBI single by Ruiz for a 9-5 lead.
Ruf's sacrifice fly in the seventh gave Philly a 10-5 advantage.
The start of the game was delayed 55 minutes due to rain ... The Phillies won four of six games against the Padres this season ... Philly plays three games in Washington starting on Friday ... San Diego continues its 10-game road trip in Atlanta with a three-game set beginning on Friday ... Ross has dropped three straight decisions over his past five starts.
