Final Score: Syracuse 13, Wake Forest 0
Syracuse, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Orange's defensive unit was relentless from start to finish as Syracuse earned a 13-0 victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in an Atlantic Coast Conference bout at the Carrier Dome.
Terrel Hunt paced Syracuse (4-4, 2-2 ACC) with 144 passing yards on 18-of-30 efficiency along with 36 yards and a score on the ground. Prince-Tyson Gulley racked up 85 yards on 13 carries while Brisly Estime led the Orange's receivers with nine receptions, which yielded 62 yards and a touchdown. The decision was the second in three outings for Syracuse.
Wake Forest (4-5, 2-4) was limited to only 213 yards of total offense and 12 first downs as it suffered its second consecutive setback. Coach Jim Grobe remains at 77 wins as he entered the contest just one victory shy of the program record. Tanner Price completed only 22 of his 54 pass attempts for 173 yards and was intercepted once. He was without his favorite target Michael Campanaro for most the contest after the star wideout left the game in the first frame with a shoulder injury. Sherman Ragland III set new career-highs with 10 catches and 91 yards.
Both offenses were shutout through the first two quarters of play. Wake Forest had a good opportunity to strike first in the second stanza after Price completed a 17-yard pass to Ragland III to give it a first down at the Orange's 31-yard line, but a pair of penalties pushed the Demon Deacons 15 yards back and they were forced to punt after being stopped on third-and-long.
The Orange also put themselves in position to end the drought as they drove to the visitors 26-yard line on their final possession of the first half. However, they came away empty handed after two penalties resulted in a loss of 15 yards, which took them out of field goal range.
Syracuse finally put some points on the board after the break as it began the third quarter with a 14-play, 75-yard drive that Hunt concluded with a six- yard touchdown run.
The Demon Deacons' offensive unit continued to have difficulty as they went three-and-out on their opening drive of the second half. Their next possession lasted two plays as Price was intercepted by Isaiah Johnson.
The Orange took advantage of the miscue as Jarrod West connected with Brisly Estime on a 25-yard touchdown pass on the next play from scrimmage. Jonathan Fisher's extra point attempt was blocked, which left the hosts with a 13-0 lead with 6:06 left in the third quarter.
Neither side scored the rest of the way as Syracuse notched its second shutout victory of the 2013 season.
Wake Forest tallied only 40 yards on the ground with an average of 2.2 yards per carry. The Orange's defense did not allow the visitors to make a single visit to the red zone.
