NCAA Game Summary - UCLA at Arizona State

(Saturday, October 27)

Final Score: UCLA 45, Arizona State 43

Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - Ka'imi Fairbairn's 33-yard field goal as time expired put the UCLA Bruins over the top as they recorded a thrilling 45-43 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils in Pac-12 Conference play at Sun Devil Stadium.

Fairbairn's conversion capped a 12-play, 60-yard drive by the Bruins (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12) as they picked up a second straight win and the third in the last four games. Brett Hundley converted 19-of-29 passes for 274 yards and four touchdowns for the visitors, but he was picked off once and sacked five times along the way.

Ninth in the nation coming into the week with an average of 125.4 ypg on the ground, Johnathan Franklin logged a game-high 164 yards and scored twice on 26 carries.

The Sun Devils (5-3, 3-2) were paced by Taylor Kelly who hit on 25-of-35 passes for 315 yards and four scores, but he was taken down for four sacks and had one pass picked off as the team suffered a second straight setback.

ASU registered the first two touchdowns of the afternoon as Kelly tossed a seven-yard scoring strike to Kevin Ozier less than two minutes into the meeting, followed by a Marion Grice two-yard TD run.

The Bruins countered with a pair of scores of their own as Franklin landed in the end zone on a three-yard run and Hundley hooked up with Devin Fuller on a 15-yard scoring pass to knot the score at 14-14 after 15 minutes of action.

The second quarter proved to be much less active as ASU's Jon Mora gave the hosts a lead with a 36-yard field goal at the 11:09 mark of the period, but UCLA captured its first advantage of the day late in the half thanks to a five-yard TD run by Franklin, providing the visitors with a 21-17 edge at the break.

The teams continued to trade scores throughout the third quarter and into the fourth, with neither squad able to pull away.

Mora's 31-yard field goal less than two minutes into the second half cut ASU's deficit to just a single point, but that was before Hundley found Damien Thigpen with a 65-yard touchdown pass on the very next play from scrimmage for UCLA.

Kelly combined with Grice on a 20-yard TD pass at the 10:39 mark of the third, but the absence of a PAT meant the Sun Devils still trailed by two points, 28-26.

Barely three minutes later, the Bruins struck again, this time as Hundley delivered a four-yard TD pass to Joseph Fauria to build the lead up to nine.

The combination of Kelly and Grice responded with an eight-yard TD pass play moments into the fourth quarter, but again UCLA fought back with a 20-yard scoring strike from Hundley to Thigpen to establish once more the nine-point edge.

Finally, later in the final period, ASU put together consecutive scoring drives in order to take the lead as Mora knocked through a 22-yard field goal at the 5:17 mark and Kelly tossed a seven-yard TD to D.J. Foster with 1:33 to play, but with so much time left on the clock, the Sun Devils couldn't maintain their 43-42 lead and subsequently suffered the setback.

Arizona State, the top passing defense in the nation heading into the week with only 130.4 ypg allowed, permitted more than twice as many yards through the air and 486 yards overall.
