(Saturday, June 30th)
Final Score: Edmonton 19, Toronto 15
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Hugh Charles ran for a touchdown and Grant Shaw booted four field goals, as the Edmonton Eskimos downed former quarterback Ricky Ray and the Toronto Argonauts, 19-15, on Saturday.
Steven Jyles, who was part of a trade that sent the Eskimos' all-time passing leader, Ray, to Toronto during the offseason was 21-of-36 for 236 yards. Shaw was also part of the deal.
Charles carried the ball 12 times for 43 yards, while Adarius Bowman caught five passes for 110 yards for Edmonton (1-0).
Ray, who received a standing ovation when he came out for his second series, was efficient in his Toronto (0-1) debut, completing 29-of-39 passes for 298 yards and a score. Chad Owens hauled in six receptions for 100 yards.
Trailing by four with 2:09 to play in the game, the Argonauts got the ball with a chance to go ahead. But Ray's pass to Owens on a 3rd-and-7 was short of the first-down marker as Edmonton regained possession with 46 seconds left.
The Eskimos jumped on the Argonauts early. A pair of Shaw field goals preceded Charles' four-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, which gave Edmonton a 13-0 lead.
Toronto got on the board later in the frame as Owens' 52-yard reception led to Cory Boyd's six-yard touchdown reception, cutting the deficit to 13-7.
Shaw booted through two more field goals in the third quarter before Noel Prefontaine kicked a pair through the uprights -- one in the third and the other midway through the fourth -- for Toronto, which cut the margin to 19-15.
