Banks asks for release, suspended by Blue Bombers

Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Defensive back Korey Banks has been suspended by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after asking for his release.

Banks, an 11-year CFL veteran who was acquired in a trade with British Columbia in January, did not play in Winnipeg's season opener last week.

"Kory spoke with (general manager) Kyle (Walters) and I and asked for his release," explained Blue Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea on Sunday, adding he was surprised by Banks' decision.

The team has not granted Banks' request just yet, instead opting to put him on the suspended list indefinitely.

"He was not willing to accept the role we had for him this week," added O'Shea. "I believe he thinks leadership comes from being out there on the field."

Banks spent the last eight seasons with BC, recording 391 tackles and 27 interceptions during that span. He broke into the league in 2004 with the Ottawa Renegades.

A two-time Grey Cup winner, Banks has 442 tackles and 37 interceptions in 163 career games.
