GAME NOTES: On the hunt for their first win away from home, the College of Charleston Cougars match up against the Arizona State Sun Devils in the second round of the inaugural Wooden Legacy tonight at Titan Gym.
On Thursday, the Cougars clashed with San Diego State in this event and were taken down by the Aztecs in a 72-52 final. The loss was the third in the last four games overall for a team that is just coming off a four-game homestand at TD Arena.
Meanwhile, the Sun Devils watched their perfect 6-0 record to start the season suffer a blow on Thursday night as the team bowed to 20th-ranked Creighton in this event, 88-60. The point total for Arizona State was 10 fewer than any other game thus far in 2013-14.
According to CofC records, the all-time series favors the Cougars by a count of 1-0, with Charleston having posted a 77-68 victory back in 1996.
Charleston's offense was nowhere to be found through the first six-plus minutes of the game against San Diego State last night, falling behind by a 17-1 score before David Wishon finally gave the team a made field goal with a put back at the 13:22 mark. The slow start hampered any potential comeback bid for the Cougars as the team shot only 33.3 percent from the floor overall and 4-of-16 behind the 3-point line. The squad didn't have a single double-digit scorer to speak of, with Adjehi Baru coming the closest with his eight points on 2-of-7 shooting.
The lack of a double-digit scorer shouldn't be that much of a surprise really, given that Canyon Barry is the only player on the roster in such a position overall through six games with 13.8 ppg. Barry's output could actually be even better if not for his 29.0 percent shooting beyond the arc and 63.6 percent accuracy at the free-throw line for a team that is hitting on a mere 61.3 percent at the charity stripe.
ASU led mighty Creighton by three points in the first minute of their meeting on Thanksgiving, but that was the end of the good news for the Sun Devils as they fell behind by 14 at the break and ended up on the wrong side of a 28- point decision. Jahii Carson produced 15 points for ASU, followed by Jermaine Marshall and Richie Edwards with 12 points apiece as the unit shot only 37.9 percent from the floor, 7-of-26 (.269) beyond the arc and a disappointing 9- of-20 (.450) at the free-throw line.
Carson leads the team in scoring with close to 22 ppg and is also first in the assists department with 5.1 apg. As a unit, ASU is putting up 81.3 ppg on 47.8 percent shooting from the floor, but the team is leaving points at the free- throw line where they are just 64.7 percent accurate.
San Diego State provided the Sun Devils with a blueprint on how to take care of Charleston so as long as ASU can put forth the effort at both ends of the floor everything should work out for the Tempe-based squad.
