GAME NOTES: The Oakland Golden Grizzlies have lost three games in a row, but they'll try to end that streak as they host the Detroit Titans in a Horizon League showdown at the Athletics Center O'Rena.
Detroit has won two games in a row and three of its last four in the Horizon League, including an 83-81 edging of Youngstown State on Sunday. The Titans are sitting at 5-6 in the conference entering this contest with Oakland, which is a game back in the Horizon League standings.
Oakland has lost three straight and five of its last seven games, falling to 4-7 in conference play. The losing skid was extended this past weekend with a 63-60 defeat at the hands of Valparaiso on Sunday.
Detroit has already built a solid all-time series lead against Oakland, owning an 11-2 record over the Grizzlies. The two teams met in Detroit earlier this season on Jan. 11, where Oakland came away victorious, 77-69.
Detroit built a 10-point lead on Youngstown State Sunday after the first half of play, but the Penguins came roaring back to tie the score and send it to overtime, where the Titans came away with a two-point edge. Juwan Howard Jr. notched 24 points to pace the Titans, while Evan Bruinsma chipped in 19 and Jarod Williams added 14. Ugochukwu Njoku grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds in the win.
Howard leads the team in scoring this season with 18.1 ppg on 42 percent shooting from the floor. Howard checks in with a third-best rebound total of 5.3 rpg and a team-best 59 assists (2.3 apg). Bruinsma is second in scoring with 12.7 ppg and a team-leading 7.8 rpg. The Titans are averaging 71.8 ppg this season through 26 games played.
Valparaiso held a 10-point advantage over Oakland as the teams headed for the locker room at the intermission. But Oakland made a comeback run in the second half, netting 51.9 percent of its shots in the frame, but couldn't fully complete the rally, ultimately losing by three. Corey Petros and Travis Bader each scored 14 points to lead the Golden Grizzlies in the game. Bader connected on 4-of-12 from 3-point range, extending his NCAA career 3-point record total. Kahlil Felder chipped in 12 points and five assists in the loss.
Bader has been on fire this season from 3-point range, which has led to him taking over the top scoring spot on the Golden Grizzlies. Bader nets an average of 19.8 ppg this season on 40.7 percent shooting from 3-point distance, and 93 percent from the free-throw line. Petros is second in scoring with 13.6 ppg and a team-leading 8.2 rpg mark. Duke Mondy is third in scoring with 11.5 ppg, and Felder tops the squad with a total of 155 assists on the year.
Oakland may have won the earlier matchup between the two squads on the road, but you can be sure Detroit is seeking some revenge. Bader, Petros and Mondy are all solid scoring commodities for the Grizzlies, but Howard and Bruinsma are also very hard to contain.
