GAME NOTES: The Iona Gaels try to put more distance between themselves and the rest of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, as they welcome the Saint Peter's Peacocks to the Hynes Athletic Center tonight.
Iona entered the week with a mark of 12-2 in conference play, putting the team ahead of the pack by at least two games at the time. The Gaels, who will host Monmouth on Valentine's Day for one of their final home dates of the 2013-14 regular season, are coming off a three-game road trip that allowed them to stretch their overall win streak to seven in a row.
The most recent outing for Iona was a wild offensive shootout against Canisius that ended in a 101-91 final in Buffalo on Sunday afternoon.
As for the Peacocks, a team which is in the bottom half of the MAAC standings with only five wins in 14 tries, they won for just the second time since the middle of last month as they grabbed a 61-50 victory at home versus Monmouth on Sunday. The win served to even the team's record at home after 10 games as well.
Last month, the Gaels dropped in on Saint Peter's and came away with a 71-63 decision thanks to A.J. English who led four players in double figures with 18 points, adding six rebounds and four assists. According to Iona sources, the Gaels lead the all-time series by a 59-48 margin.
Marvin Dominique tallied a game-high 20 points for the Peacocks as they took down Monmouth at home over the weekend by double figures. Dominique also cleared six rebounds and blocked four shots as Saint Peter's limited the visitors to a mere 29.5 percent shooting from the floor, including 1-of-14 behind the 3-point line. Desi Washington chipped in another 17 points, although he shot just 4-of-12 from the field for the Peacocks.
One of the weaker scoring teams in not just the MAAC but the nation, Saint Peter's is producing a mere 63.6 ppg, shooting a collective 39.7 percent from the floor and only 30.4 percent behind the 3-point line. Dominique paces the group with 17.3 ppg and is also the top man when it comes to hitting the glass with his 8.7 rpg as well. Washington's 13.3 ppg are generated off a mere 35.8 percent shooting from the field.
In a game that featured eight ties and 14 lead changes, the Gaels bounced back from a nine-point deficit in the first half, seven at the break, in order to capture the double-digit victory with their triple-figure performance. English scored a career-high 32 points, adding six assists and five rebounds, followed by David Laury with 23 points and nine boards off the bench. Isaiah Williams pitched in 18 points and both Tre Bowman and Sean Armand with 10, the latter also handing out a game-high nine assists.
Scoring at least 83 points in all but one of the last 10 contests, the Gaels are one of the highest scoring teams in the nation right now with 84.5 ppg, thanks in large part to 41.0 percent accuracy out on the perimeter. Through 23 games, Iona has averaged better than 10 3-point conversions per outing, compared to about half that for the competition. Armand (18.3 ppg) and English (18.0 ppg) have combined to hit 136 triples, making it difficult for opponents to pick their poison.
Because of the scoring disparity between these two squads, it is almost impossible seeing the Peacocks being competitive in this meeting, but that's why they play the games.
