GAME NOTES: Two potential NCAA Tournament teams will square off at Calihan Hall on Friday as the Toledo Rockets battle the Stony Brook Seawolves in the 2K Sports Classic.
The Rockets are undefeated through three games after knocking off Boston College by three points on the road before returning home to down Florida A&M, 79-69, on Monday. Toledo was predicted to be one of the top programs in the Mid-American Conference in 2013-14 and it has lived up to the expectations by shooting a red-hot 55.3 percent from the field and outrebounding the opposition by an average of 11 boards per tilt. All five of Toledo's starters are carrying double-digit scoring averages through three games which has helped the team average a MAC-best 92 ppg.
Stony Brook is the defending American East regular-season champion and its early season performance indicates history could instantly repeat itself. The Seawolves have notched wins over Marist, Division III foe Haverford and Northeastern, while their only loss came to the Hoosiers of Indiana at Assembly Hall, where most visitors will struggle to find success.
This will be the first meeting in history between Toledo and Stony Brook.
Toledo managed to take down Boston College on the road despite heading into the intermission with an eight-point deficit. The Rockets overcame the Eagles' advantage as they poured in 69.6 percent of their field goal attempts and converted 22-of-27 tries at the charity stripe over the final 20 minutes. They continued to play well offensively versus Florida A&M, finishing the contest with 25 made field goals on 20 assists. Julius Brown and Rian Pearson both scored 18 points in the team's most recent outing. Brown also added 11 assists while Justin Drummond chipped in 16 points. Brown is pacing the team with 18 points and just under 10 assists per outing. The Rockets are an aggressive unit which has led to 111 free-throw attempts in three games.
The Seawolves were not intimidated by the Hoosiers in their recent outing as they outscored the Big Ten program, 20-16, in the paint in the opening stanza and trailed by only six points at the intermission. Indiana's tremendous size and athletic advantages helped it pull away after the break and Stony Brook could not keep up as it hit on only 39.3 percent of its field goal attempts in the contest. Carson Puriefoy led the Seawolves with 22 points while Jameel Warney tallied 19 points and seven rebounds. The team had knocked down 41.3 percent of its 3-point field goal tries in its three previous games, but went just 3-of-19 at Indiana. Anthony Jackson, who leads the team in scoring with 18 ppg, will look to bounce back after going 4-of-14 on field goal attempts in his last appearance. Dave Coley also had a rough outing and finished 0-of-8 from the field.
This very evenly matched tournament bout could go either way. The neutral floor will be much easier for Stony Brook to perform on after being rattled by one of the best homecourt advantages in its last outing. Toledo has a handful of contributors along with a few players with proven all-conference caliber ability. The Rockets hold a very slight edge, but the Seawolves could easily hand them their first loss if their shooting accuracy returns.
