GAME NOTES: A pair of struggling teams meet up on Saturday evening, as the San Diego Toreros host the Southern Utah Thunderbirds at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The Toreros come into the contest having lost three of their last four games. On Sunday, San Diego dropped a 72-61 decision to UC Santa Barbara at home. The Toreros failed to build on last week's trouncing of Pacific College and instead fell to a still solid 8-4 on the campaign.
The Thunderbirds come into this contest riding a seven-game losing streak. The skid found its exclamtion point on Wednesday in a 76-39 rout at the hands of powerhouse San Diego State. Southern Utah hasn't won since the season opener against Arizona Christian.
Duda Sanadze scored 19 points to lead the Toreros last time out. Johnny Dee added 18 points and Dennis Kramer tallied 17 points and 11 boards for San Diego, which shot just .400 from the floor, including an 8-of-26 effort from behind the arc.
Dee leads San Diego in scoring, averaging nearly 18 points per game. Sanadze is next with 12.8 points per game for the Toreros, who average 71.3 points per game. The team was outscored at the free-throw line, 17-5.
Not much went right for Southern Utah in its lopsided loss to the Aztecs this week. Trey Kennedy led the team with 10 points, but no other Thunderbird netted more than seven points in the loss. Southern Utah shot a miserable .286 from the floor, while actually shooting better from long range (.364).
The Thunderbirds are an offensively challenged squad. Kennedy is the Thunderbird's leading scoring, averaging just 11.8 points per game. As a team they shoot only 34.8 percent from the field and average only 56.5 points per contest. They aren't much better at the defensive end, as opponents shoot an impressive 48.1 percent from the floor and average nearly 80 points per game. The Thunderbirds get outrebounded by an average of 11 caroms per game and have nearly three times as many turnovers than steals.
Southern Utah will have a tough time matching up with the much better San Diego roster. Don't expect much of a fight here, as the Toreros are too talented to even allow Southern Utah to make this a close game.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: San Diego 78, Southern Utah 51
