GAME NOTES: Two struggling Mid-American Conference teams battle tonight, as the Kent State Golden Flashes host the Bowling Green Falcons at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center.
Kent State comes into the contest having dropped two in a row after losing to Eastern Michigan on Saturday, 70-53.
Derek Jackson and Darren Goodson scored 11 points apiece to lead Kent State, which suffered from long scoring droughts in the setback, its sixth in seven games.
Eastern Michigan broke open a close game and took a 35-25 lead into the break, as Kent State failed to score during a seven-minute stretch in the first half. Then, after a 7-0 run to open the second half, trimmed the deficit to just three, the Flashes managed only two points over the next four minutes as the Eagles rebuilt a double-digit advantage.
Kris Brewer leads the Golden Flashes, who are just 3-7 in the MAC, in scoring with just 11.7 ppg. Jackson (10.7) and Goodson (10.6) round out the double- digit scorers for Kent State, which averages 70 ppg this season. Goodson also leads the team with 4.2 rpg.
Bowling Green also enters tonight's fray having dropped consecutive games. Most recently, the Falcons lost to Akron in a 65-63 final on Sunday.
Jehvon Clarke banked home a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left, helping the Falcons erase a 14-point deficit and knot the game at 63-63, but Akron's Quincy Diggs hit a jumper with four seconds left to lift the Zips to the win.
Clarke led Bowling Green with 19 points and Richaun Holmes added 14 points and 13 rebounds, as the Falcons lost for the fourth time in five games. Spencer Parker added 12 points for Bowling Green, which is just 4-6 in the MAC.
Bowling Green averages just 64 ppg, but has four double-digit scorers. Holmes leads the team with 13.9 ppg and 7.5 rpg. Parker adds 12.9 ppg, while Clarke chips in 12.8 ppg and Anthony Henderson contributes 11.3 ppg for the Falcons, who are just 3-6 on the road this season.
Kent State is 9-5 at home and due for a win. Bowling Green is coming off a tough home loss and has not been good on the road. Even though the Falcons have a more balanced scoring attack, the Flashes average more points and have dominated the series in recent years, winning five of seven.
