GAME NOTES: The IUPU-Fort Wayne Mastodons and Bowling Green Falcons are both coming off losses, and they'll square off tonight in a non-league tilt at the Stroh Center.
IPFW was throttled at home by Eastern Kentucky last Sunday, 90-68. The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Mastodons, who will return home to host Kalamazoo on Saturday in their final non-conference tune-up.
Bowling Green was also in action this past Sunday and was dealt a 46-43 setback at Wright State, which halted a three-game win streak. Following this contest, the Falcons will host Eastern Michigan next Wednesday in their Mid- American Conference opener.
IPFW holds a 2-1 edge in the head-to-head series with BGSU.
The Mastodons led Eastern Kentucky 10-1 and then 22-13 early in Sunday's game. But they suddenly went cold while the Colonels went on a 21-4 run and took an 11-point lead into the break. IPFW was unable to slow the bleeding in the second half as EKU went on to shoot a healthy 58.7 percent for the game. Mo Evans scored a team-high 13 points off the bench in the loss, while Joe Edwards added 12 points, and Isaiah McCray finished with 10. On the season, reserve Luis Jacobo is averaging a team-best 13.8 ppg despite not starting a single game. He is shooting 40 percent from 3-point range (20-of-50). Steve Forbes is next in line with 11.3 ppg to go along with 5.0 rpg.
BGSU boasts a deep starting lineup led by Richaun Holmes, a 54.2-percent shooter from the floor who is averaging 14.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest. He is joined in double figures by Spencer Parker (12.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg), Jehvon Clarke (11.6 ppg, 4.7 apg) and Anthony Henderson (11.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg), while center Cameron Black (7.8 ppg, 7.4 rpg) anchors the rebounding effort. The Falcons held Wright State to just 20 second-half points and did not allow a 3-pointer in the game (0-for-13), but they could not overcome a slow start and ultimately were done in by 21 turnovers. Holmes recorded a double-double in the loss, as he scored 15 points and pulled down 10 boards.
Both of these teams failed to maintain their energy and focus for a full 40 minutes the last time out. The Mastodons were particularly ineffective at the defensive end, and they face a tough challenge against a balanced Bowling Green squad.
