GAME NOTES: Trying for their fourth consecutive victory, the Dayton Flyers will be out for revenge tonight when they host the Rhode Island Rams in Atlantic 10 action.
The Flyers suffered an 88-76 loss at Rhode Island on Jan. 25, and that was in the midst of a four-game skid. E.C. Matthews notched a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Rams in that game. Xavier Munford scored a game-high 27 points for the Rams. Dyshawn Pierre scored 17 points to lead the Flyers.
Dayton is 3-0 in the month of February for the first time since the 2000-01 season. The Flyers are coming off a 72-69 triumph at St. Bonaventure on Saturday. Devin Oliver had 15 points and four rebounds. Vee Sanford also finished with 15 points in a reserve role.
Sanford (10.0 ppg), Jordan Sibert (12.2 ppg) and Oliver (12.3 ppg) are part of a team that is shooting 47.6 percent from the field and an Atlantic 10 best 38.1 percent from beyond the arc. At 75.0 ppg, Dayton is the fourth-best scoring offense in the conference. Oliver is one of just four players in Division I who leads his team in scoring, rebounds, assists and steals. Over his last five games, Oliver is shooting 59.1 percent from the field and 64.3 percent from 3-point range. Center Matt Kavanaugh is shooting 62.5 percent from the floor over the last five contests. Kavanaugh will play in his 100th career game in this one. Pierre (11.3 ppg) has scored in double figures in 10 of his last 15 games. Khari Price is third in the A-10 in 3-point field goal percentage (.439).
The Rams are coming off a 73-68 home loss to Massachusetts on Sunday. For URI, which has lost three straight, Matthews paced all scorers with 24 points, while Munford netted 19.
URI has three players averaging double figures, led by Munford (16.6 ppg). Matthews (12.4 ppg) and junior transfer Gilvydas Biruta (10.9 ppg, 7.1 rpg) are also part of the starting lineup for a team that is last in the conference in scoring offense (67.4 ppg). The Rams are also third-to-last in free-throw percentage (.662) and last in shooting from beyond the arc (.308). The Rams have gotten a boost recently from Jarelle Reischel, who is averaging 10.3 ppg in 21.7 minutes coming off the bench over his last three games.
Rhode Island has won seven straight over the Flyers, but Dayton seems primed to get its first win over the Rams since Jan. 9, 2008. Rhode Island is 0-5 in A-10 road games this season.
