GAME NOTES: A pair of teams hoping to climb the Ohio Valley Conference ladder meet tonight, as the SIU Edwardsville Cougars visit the Austin Peay Governors.
The Governors improved to 5-6 in OVC play on Thursday night, defeating Eastern Illinois, 88-83, while the Cougars fell to 6-6 after an 82-72 setback to Murray State on Thursday.
As a result, Austin Peay is now just a half game behind SIUE for second place in the OVC's West Division. Murray State leads the division with a 10-2 mark entering Saturday's action.
Austin Peay has won three of its last five after losing three straight. On Thursday, Ed Dyson recorded his first double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds and Travis Betran added 23 points, as the Governors remain in the OVC title chase despite missing point guard Damarius Smith for a second straight game an ankle injury.
Chris Horton was held to just four points and three rebounds for the Govs, who are 7-3 at home this season. As a result, Horton lost his leading-scorer title to Betran. Horton averages 13.6 ppg, while Betran nets 14.0 ppg for Austin Peay, which averages 75.5 ppg.
The Cougars' setback on Thursday was just their second in six outings. Murray State used a 13-2 run over the final 3:33 seconds of the first half to build an 11-pont halftime lead and held on for the win. Maurice Wiltz led SIUE with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Donivine Stewart scored 11 points. Kris Davis and Rozell Nunn each scored 10 points.
The Cougars' recent surge has put them in the postseason conversation. However, if they are going to stay in the debate, they will have to play better away from home. SIU Edwardsville is just 1-11 on the road this season.
The Cougars are led in scoring by Stewart's 12 ppg. He is the only double- figure scorer for SIUE, which tallies 73.2 ppg.
This is the second meeting of the season between these two schools. Nunn scored 15 points, including a put-back basket with 12 seconds remaining, as the Cougars defeated the Governors, 71-67, at the Vadalabene Center.
For the Cougars, Davis and Stewart each finished with 10 points. Horton posted a double-double for the Govs with a game-high 20 points to go along with 11 rebounds, while Will Triggs added 17 points and Smith chipped in with 11.
This time around, expect the home court advantage to be enough for the Governors to overtake the Cougars in the division standings.
