GAME NOTES: Having lost five of their last six games, the Cal State Northridge Matadors will be looking to take advantage of a matchup against the struggling UC Davis Aggies in a Big West Conference showdown at the Pavilion.
The five losses the Matadors have suffered have all been in conference play, leaving Cal State Northridge with just a 3-5 record in the Big West - two and a half games behind three teams in a tie with a 5-2 conference record. The Matadors dropped a Saturday showcase at Hawaii, 77-63.
UC Davis has lost five of its last seven games, and is 2-5 in the Big West standings, which occupies the bottom spot in the conference. The Aggies are coming off an 82-67 defeat at the hands of UC Santa Barbara, one of the co- leaders in the Big West.
Cal State Northridge has a hold of the all-time series with UC Davis, 18-11. That includes an 89-77 win over the Aggies this season back on Jan. 9 at Northridge.
Northridge found itself down by only two points at the end of the first half against Hawaii Saturday night, but let the Rainbow Warriors pull even farther ahead in the second frame. Stephan Hicks scored 18 points to pace the Matadors, adding seven rebounds to his stat line. Josh Greene chipped in 15 points, and Stephen Maxwell added nine with eight boards. The Matadors didn't get much of a contribution from their bench, with only two players scoring a total of five points.
Maxwell is the team's leading scorer this season, and paces a trio of solid performers for the Matadors. Maxwell nets an average of 17 ppg on 58.5 percent shooting from the floor, which is lower after his nine-point night against Hawaii. Hicks adds 16.3 ppg, and Greene scores 15.1 ppg. Maxwell leads the team in rebounding as well, pulling down 8.9 rpg. Landon Drew tops the squad with a 3.1 apg average.
UC Santa Barbara pulled ahead of UC Davis early in the team's last outing and never looked back, running to a 36-22 halftime advantage which ultimately led to the 15-point win. Ryan Sypkens led the way for the Aggies with 22 points on 6-of-14 shooting in the loss. Corey Hawkins contributed 15 points, five rebounds and six assists. UC Davis shot 41.8 percent from the floor in the game, including 33.3 percent from 3-point range.
Hawkins owns the top spot on the team in terms of scoring, averaging 17.9 ppg this season on 44.7 percent shooting. His 60 assists on the season is second only to Darius Graham's 78 total on the year. Sypkens is the only other active player for UC Davis to average point totals in the double digits at 12.4 ppg. Georgi Funtarov is the team's active leading rebounder at 4.6 rpg.
Cal State Northridge has been having a dismal season on the road. However, this is a perfect opportunity for the Matadors to improve their away record against a team that allows 78.6 ppg to its opponents.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Cal State Northridge 76, UC David 68
