GAME NOTES: The Drake Bulldogs have dropped three consecutive games, and have quite the challenge waiting as they travel to face the Missouri State Bears in Missouri Valley Conference play at JGH Arena.
Drake started the season 10-3 overall, but fell apart once conference play began. The Bulldogs have lost three in a row and nine of their last 11 altogether, including a 60-56 defeat at the hands of Indiana State Sunday.
Missouri State had a two-game win streak snapped on Saturday with a 72-54 loss against Southern Illinois. Still, the Bears have won four of their last six games, and have a 6-6 conference record.
Missouri State owns the all-time series record against Drake, which more than triples the amount of wins the Bulldogs have in head-to-head matchups. The Bears lead, 37-11, but lost at Drake, 84-74, on Jan. 29.
Although Indiana State was favored heavily against the struggling Bulldogs Sunday, Drake managed to hang in with the second-place Sycamores and only trailed by two points per half. The Sycamores on walked away with a four-point win. Trevor Berkeley scored 12 points to pace the Bulldogs, while Aaron Hawley netted 11 and Richard Carter contributed 10. Drake shot 43.2 percent from the floor in the game.
Carter tops the Bulldogs in scoring this season with a 16.8 ppg average on 41.3 percent shooting. Carter's 85 assists and 48 steals are both tops on the team as well. The second and third-place scorers on the team have only played a fraction of the total games in which the Bulldogs have participated in this season, but Hawley has provided solid scoring in 18 games started with 9.8 ppg. Jacob Enevold leads the team in rebounding at 5.3 rpg.
Southern Illinois broke open a close second half to down the Bears Saturday by double-digit points. Jarmar Gulley scored a team-high 15 points in the losing effort, complemented by 11 Devon Thomas points. They were the only two players to net double figures in the contest for Missouri State. Ron Mvouika grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
Gulley leads the team in scoring this season at 15 ppg on 49.1 percent shooting. His 6 rpg average and 38 steals are both team-highs as well. Marcus Marshall, who is out after undergoing knee surgery, is the only other player on the roster averaging double-digit point totals. Austin Ruder is the next closest at 8.4 ppg. Dorrian Williams tops the squad with 86 assists on the year.
The Bears, despite coming off a loss, have proven to be one of the better Missouri Valley Conference teams, especially playing on their home floor.
