GAME NOTES: Old Dominion hits the road for the first time in 2013-14, but instead of just landing some place in the United States, the Monarchs are heading to Mexico to battle the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Riviera Division of the 2013 Cancun Challenge.
Since opening the campaign with an overtime loss to Missouri State, the Monarchs have turned it around with four straight victories. The latest triumph coming over the weekend versus Georgia Southern in an 86-69 final at the Ted Constant Convocation Center as part of this event.
As for the Mountaineers, they too have won four of their first five games, with their lone setback being an 87-82 loss at Virginia Tech. The four wins have all come in Morgantown, the latest being an 88-55 blowout versus Presbyterian over the weekend.
In terms of the all-time series between these two schools, ODU has taken three of the previous four encounters. The most recent matchup took place in 1991-92, as the Monarchs captured a narrow 83-82 victory.
The teams will be back in action again on Wednesday against either Wisconsin of Saint Louis, depending on Tuesday's results.
West Virginia scored the first points of the game against the Blue Hose and never looked back, shooting 49.2 percent from the field and 11-of-25 behind the 3-point line, en route to the lopsided outcome. Eron Harris posted 19 points, Juwan Staten 16 and seven assists, followed by Remi Dibo with 14 points off the bench. Devin Williams registered a double-double for the hosts with 11 points and 11 rebounds, as the team dominated the glass, 40-28, limiting Presbyterian to just three offensive boards.
Harris is averaging 20.4 ppg on the strength of his 48.3 percent shooting beyond the arc, not to mention 75.0 percent at the free-throw line. Staten accounts for another 19.2 ppg and is not only one of the better rebounders for the Mountaineers with 5.4 rpg, but he is also first on the unit with 38 assists, against a mere four turnovers. WVU is averaging less than 10 miscues per outing.
Aaron Bacote scored a team-best 26 points and handed out six assists as the Old Dominion Monarchs captured the 17-point win over the Georgia Southern Eagles at home over the weekend. Also scoring in double figures for the Monarchs were Jordan Baker and Dimitri Batten with 17 and 15 points, respectively. From a defensive standpoint, the Monarchs held GSU to just 35.1 percent shooting from the floor and allowed only two assists.
Playing the passing lanes and forcing opposing players to create for themselves, ODU has permitted an average of less than eight assists per game, while Bacote (21.6 ppg) has handed out 25 of his own for the Monarchs. While the team is outscoring the competition by more than 10 points per contest, that margin could be even greater if not for the fact that it is shooting only 57.7 percent at the charity stripe.
Both of these teams may have won four of five games to open the season, but the competition really has not been that stiff for either. The Monarchs can't afford to have another poor effort at the free-throw line because WVU is the sort of team that will make them pay.
