GAME NOTES: The UNC Greensboro Spartans may be tied for last in the North Division of the Southern Conference, but tonight they'll go for a season sweep of a team they've dominated the last couple of seasons, taking on the Samford Bulldogs at the Pete Hanna Center.
The Spartans have won four in a row over the Samford Bulldogs, including a 66-64 decision on Jan. 24. Junior guard Trevis Simpson single-handedly provided the Spartans with the win. He scored 30 points and netted 22 of the team's 27 second-half points, including their last 14 points over the final eight minutes of the game.
UNCG snapped a three-game skid with a 94-68 triumph over Chattanooga Thursday. Nicholas Paulos scored a career-high 30 points while knocking down a school record 10 3-pointers. Paulos took all of his shots from beyond the arc and was 10-of-12. Korey Van Dussen added 11 points while Kelvin McNeil, David Williams, and Trevis Simpson had 10 points each. McNeil also had eight rebounds while Drew Parker dished out seven assists.
Simpson (19.0 ppg) leads the team and conference in scoring and Derrell Armstrong (14.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg) is second in point production and Kayel Locke (10.2 ppg) third. Nicholas Paulos (8.3 ppg). The Spartans are the second- leading scoring team in the SoCon, averaging 72.2 points, but they're allowing 73.7. Additionally, the Spartans are just ninth in field-goal percentage (.418).
Conversely, Samford's offense has struggled this season. The Bulldogs are averaging 61.1 points, which are third-to-last in the conference. Hurting them are 65.9 percent free throw shooting, which is tied for last in the SoCon. On the positive side, Samford is shooting 37.4 percent from 3-point range, the top mark in the conference, but they're also the worst rebounding team in the league.
The Bulldogs had won two in a row until a heart-breaking 63-62 loss at home against Elon on Thursday. Samford was led by a 24-point performance from Clide Geffrard Jr. who made good on 6-of-8 3-point attempts. Raijon Kelly added a double-double with 17 points and 11 assists, while Tim Williams had 16 points and eight rebounds. Kelly took the potential game-winning shot at the buzzer, but his attempt hit the rim. Kelly (14.4), Williams (14.2) and Geffrard (11.6) are all in double figures in scoring. Williams (7.0) paces the squad in rebounding.
The last three games between UNCG and Samford have come down to the final possession. Simpson is averaging 23.3 points in those contests. The question is can Simpson push the Spartans over the top again in what's been a tough season?
