GAME NOTES: The Samford Bulldogs will attempt to keep within striking distance in the Southern Conference's North Division, as they take on the Furman Paladins in conference action at Timmons Arena on Saturday.
The Bulldogs are coming off a rather ugly 40-33 win over Wofford on Thursday. Despite being 9-17 overall, the team has had much more success in-conference, sitting in third place in the SoCon's North Division at 7-6, three games behind divisional-leader Elon.
The Paladins are just 6-18 on the season and are currently just a half game out of the conference basement, with a 3-10 league ledger. Furman enters this contest with a five-game losing streak in tow, after getting routed by Chattanooga on Thursday, 83-49.
The Paladins own a 9-3 advantage in the series with the Bulldogs and are a perfect 5-0 against Samford in Greenville.
Neither team had much success offensively, as Wofford and Samford combined for just 73 points. The Bulldogs converted just 32.6 percent from the floor, with that being better than Wofford's 27.1 percent effort. Clide Geffrard Jr. was responsible for almost half of the Bulldog's scoring output, finishing with 17 points in the win.
Scoring has been a problem for Samford all season long, as the Bulldogs are netting just 60.9 ppg on .439 shooting, while being saddled with a -6.3 scoring margin. To compound the problem, Samford is also being outrebounded by just under seven caroms per game. The scoring pool is obviously not deep, although three Bulldogs are currently averaging double figures. Raijon Kelly and Tim Williams top the list at 14.2 ppg each. Geffrard adds 10.8 ppg.
The Paladins were no match for Chattanooga this week, as Furman shot a mere .373 from the floor overall, including an ugly 4-of-21 from 3-point range in the lopsided loss. Colin Reddick and Stephen Croone finished with 12 points each, while Bryant Irwin added 10 points in defeat.
Colin Reddick is the only double-digit performer on a team that is averaging just 62.4 ppg on the year. Reddick is shooting .518 from the floor, averaging 12.6 ppg, while also pacing Furman on the glass (6.3 rpg). Croone and Charlie Reddick are just below double figures in scoring at 9.8 and 9.5 ppg, respectively. However, Charlie Reddick is listed as questionable for this game with a leg injury.
This isn't likely to be a shootout, as neither team has stood out on the offensive end this year. The Bulldogs have a little bit of momentum, while the Paladins are mired in a losing streak. which should tip the scales in Samford's favor.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Samford 59, Furman 57
