GAME NOTES: The College of Charleston is running its offense at full bore of late, and on Saturday night the Cougars face the team that leads the Southern Conference in scoring, the UNC Greensboro Spartans.
The Cougars have won three in a row, all by at least 13 points. That includes a 72-59 triumph at home over Appalachian State on Wednesday. Andrew Lawrence led the way with 16 points. Anthony Thomas added 14, while Anthony Stitt and Theo Johnson each chipped in with 10.
The College of Charleston paces the SoCon in field goal percentage (.445) and is second to Davidson in scoring margin (+7.6) in conference contests. Although the Cougars average only 64.6 points per contest for the season, they have stepped up in the last three games at a 73.3 ppg scoring clip.
Lawrence leads the team with 13.8 points a game. He and Stitt, (10.8 ppg), the second-leading scorer, have both shot better than 38 percent from 3-point range, with both ranking among the top-15 players in the conference. Adjehi Baru (10.0 p pg) leads the team and is first in the SoCon in rebounding at 8.5 per contest. Thomas (8.5 ppg) is also part of the starting lineup, as is Willis Hall (7.1 ppg, 6.0 rpg) for a team that is giving up only 61.2 ppg, second-best in the conference. The Cougars are also holding opponents to 40.3 percent shooting, which is again second-best in the SoCon. They're especially tenacious out on the perimeter, as teams are making just 28.6 percent of their 3-point shots, lowest in the league. The CofC also leads the Southern Conference in blocks at 4.8 per game.
As for the Spartans, they not only haven't won on the road in eight tries this season, but that winless stretch goes to 10 contests. The last time UNCG won an away game was Feb. 11, 2012 at Chattanooga. The Spartans actually haven't played on the road in a long time, as they're coming off a five-game homestand, which ended wtih a 72-66 loss against Elon on Thursday. Trevis Simpson scored a game-high 21 points to go along with five rebounds, but he shot just 7-of-25 from the floor and turned the ball over six times. Kayel Locke scored 16 points and Derrell Armstrong added 14, as UNCG had a modest two-game win streak come to an end.
Simpson is averaging 19.9 ppg, which is easily the most in the SoCon. That was helped by a school-record 41 points against Chattanooga last Sunday. He is just 18 points shy of moving into the top-10 in scoring. The Spartans are averaging 72.5 ppg which leads the league, but they are also allowing a league-high 74.8 ppg. Armstrong is averaging 15.4 ppg and Locke comes in at 10.2 ppg.
Last year, the Spartans swept the Cougars in the regular-season series, but this time around Charleston is clearly playing much better and should continue to ascent in the standings in the SoCon South.
