GAME NOTES: One of only two teams in the Colonial Athletic Association still without a league victory, the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington give it another shot on Saturday afternoon as they host the George Mason Patriots at Trask Coliseum.
The Seahawks, winless in three CAA outings thus far, have dropped four straight games and six of the last seven overall after bowing to James Madison on Wednesday night in a 78-50 final.
As for the Patriots, they are heading in the other direction, having won back- to-back conference bouts. Since losing to Northeastern in the league opener back on Jan. 3 by double figures, George Mason has defeated William & Mary on the road, 73-66, a week ago and crushed Old Dominion at home on Thursday night, 71-46.
The Patriots lead the all-time series, one that began back in 1982, by a count of 40-30. George Mason has ripped off nine straight victories over the Seahawks, including a 75-69 triumph in the most recent encounter last February in this building.
The last win for UNCW took place on Feb. 16, 2008 in a 75-73 final at the Patriot Center in Fairfax.
Against Old Dominion the Patriots put up a tough defensive front, holding the visitors to just eight made field goals in the first half and a mere 4-of-20 shooting after the break, making it that much easier to come away with the 25- point win. Patrick Holloway led the offense for the Patriots with a game-high 15 points off the bench, followed by Paris Bennett with 13 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the floor over 16 minutes of action. The starting five for George Mason accounted for just 13 points. One of three players to have started every game for the Patriots, Sherrod Wright leads the way with 17.1 ppg, shooting 52.0 percent from the floor and 40.0 percent behind the 3-point line, yet he is the only player scoring more than eight points per game for a team generating just 64.8 ppg.
The Seahawks couldn't really find the basket from anywhere on the floor versus James Madison earlier this week, the hosts shooting just 14-of-51 from the field, 3-of-15 beyond the arc and 19-of-31 at the free-throw line in the lopsided setback. Keith Rendleman was the lone double-digit scorer for UNCW with his 17 points, but he made just five of his 14 field goal attempts. The starting five overall connected on a combined 10-of-41 from the floor. Similar to the Patriots, UNC Wilmington has only one player scoring in double figures on a regular basis with Rendleman accounting for 15.9 ppg. Also the team leader with 10.3 rpg and 2.0 steals per contest, Rendleman is shooting 50.9 percent from the field, but just 59.8 percent at the free-throw line, the team hitting 63.9 percent at the charity stripe.
Scoring just 60.3 ppg, the Seahawks don't scare many opponents with their offense. The defense hasn't been that stout either, which makes one believe George Mason should be in line for the win in this meeting.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: George Mason 73, UNC Wilmington 57
