GAMES NOTES: In a battle of Lone Star State squads, the Texas-Arlington Mavericks will travel to The Super Pit to take on the North Texas Mean Green on Wednesday.
UTA has a record of 2-1 coming into this game. Surprisingly, both wins have come on the road, most recently a 65-58 defeat at Samford. Before that game the Mavericks lost their first and only home game thus far to Oklahoma, 63-59. Although it won't be back home for the next two games either, UTA will remain within the state of Texas to face Texas and UT-Pan American in its next two games.
North Texas has split its first six games and sit at an even 3-3 overall. The most recent decision was an 80-64 loss on the road to Virginia which came on the heels of a three-game winning streak for the Mean Green. North Texas will also be at home in four of its next five matchups beginning against Louisiana on Saturday.
In the all-time series North Texas owns a slight 24-22 lead. In last season's contest it was UTA that took home a victory with a 97-64 rout in Arlington.
The Mavericks were very efficient and selective with their shots, especially in the second half, against Samford. UTA hit on 51.1 percent overall, including an 8-of-12 effort in the second half when it hit all three of its attempts from 3-point range. The Mavericks had a 35-27 edge in rebounds and overcame 18 turnovers in the win. Jordan Reves was the standout with a 14- point, 12-rebound double-double.
In its first three games UTA has not been an overly productive offensive team, scoring only 62.0 points per game, while shooting 43.0 percent from the field. The Mavericks put in work on the boards though, bringing down 41.0 rebounds per game. Double-doubles have been a common occurrence early on for Reves, who has two in three contests this season. Reves' (10.3 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 2.7 bpg) scoring has actually been what stopped him from getting three as he has at least 10 rebounds in each game. Kevin Butler (13.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg) joins Reves as the only other scorer in double figures. Shaq White-Miller (4l.7 ppg, 4.7 apg) doesn't score often but handles the distribution duties.
A slow start in the first half was the cause for North Texas' loss to Virginia as the Mean Green hit only 7-of-25 shots in the first 20 minutes and trailed 42-22 at halftime in the loss. North Texas was particularly ineffective from 3-point range, hitting just 3-of-19 shots from beyond the arc. Tony Mitchell scored 16 points and came a rebound shy of a double-double.
North Texas is not a team that scores with much efficiency as it connects on only 40.8 percent of its shots from the floor. However the Mean Green are scoring more than 70 points per game and like UTA, put up solid numbers on the glass (40.5 rpg). Mitchell (15.7 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 2.7 bpg) is the unquestioned leader of this team with his ability to score, rebound and protect the rim. Jordan Williams (12.8 ppg) is also scoring in double figures, while Chris Jones (9.8 ppg, 5.7 apg) has been strong in facilitating the offense. Alzee Williams (9.8 ppg) also gets in the scoring mix, while Jacob Holmen (7.7 ppg) is normally the first guy off the bench.
The battle between Mitchell and Reves is what to watch for in this contest. Mitchell will have the edge with his superior scoring ability, which will lead to a North Texas win.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: North Texas 73, Texas-Arlington 62
