GAME NOTES: The UC Davis Aggies will host the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks as
both teams are still searching for their first win of the new season.
NAU is coming off a harsh 92-54 whipping at the hands of nationally-ranked
UNLV. The Lumberjacks shot a mere 25.0 percent from field and 23.8 percent
from three-point range, while allowing UNLV to shoot 50.0 percent from the
field. That loss dropped them to 0-2 as the team also fell on the road to
Oregon (83-73) to open up the 2012-13 campaign.
As for UC Davis, the Aggies lost their season opener at Oklahoma State, 73-65,
but have been idle since Nov. 9. UC Davis turned the ball over 21 times in the
game, which led to 22 points for the Cowboys. They will be playing in their
home-opener and have won two straight and 25 of their last 34 home-openers.
The team has won four of its five home-openers since joining the Division I
Northern Arizona holds a 2-1 series advantage against UC Davis, but the Aggies
got in the win column a year ago in Flagstaff.
The Lumberjacks are still in search for their first win as they travel to
Davis for their third straight road game to kick off the season. They fell to
Oregon in their opener and then routed by UNLV. In the loss to Oregon, NAU's
24 personal fouls led to 22 made free throws by the Ducks compared to only
for the Lumberjacks. In their first two games, the Lumberjacks have shot a
mere 33.8 percent from the field, while allowing their opponents to shoot an
efficient 49.2 percent. They are allowing 87.5 ppg, while only recording 63.5
ppg themselves. DeWayne Russell is leading the team in scoring, averaging 15.5
ppg. He is followed in the scoring column by Michael Dunn (12.0 ppg) and Gabe
Rogers (10.5 ppg), although the scoring pool dries up considerably after that.
UC Davis fell in its opener even while outrebounding the Cowboys 43-29 and
shooting 41.8 percent from the field compared to 40.9 by Oklahoma State. Corey
Hawkins led the team in scoring with 13 points, but Ryan Howley was more
impressive, recording his first career double-double with 11 points and 13
rebounds. True freshman Darius Graham made a solid first impression for the
Aggies, netting seven points, grabbing five rebounds and recording four steals
in his debut. The team's 21 turnovers are what hurt the Aggies and taking
better care of the ball is a must if they plan on improving on their five
total wins from a year ago.
Both teams are searching for their first win and with the Lumberjacks finding
difficulty scoring points, UC Davis has a great shot at winning this one.
