GAME NOTES: Losers of two in a row, the UAB Blazers seek their first win away
from home this season as they challenge the Troy Trojans in non-conference
action at Trojan Arena on Tuesday night.
The Blazers have just returned from Texas where they competed in the South
Padre Island Tournament. After winning the first two games of that event at
home in Bartow Arena against Navy and Prairie View A&M, UAB then bowed to
Illinois State and, most recently on Saturday, TCU by just three points,
As for the Trojans, they started out the 2012-13 campaign with a 1-2 mark, but
then the squad closed out the CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Chattanooga with
victories over the host Mocs and Southeast Missouri State. Then on Sunday,
Troy also took care of Alabama State at home in a 66-62 final.
As far as the all-time series between these two in-state rivals is concerned,
UAB has won all five previous encounters, including a double-digit win about
this same time last season at home.
The Blazers led by three points right out of the gate against TCU, but the
thrill was short-lived as the Horned Frogs swung momentum in their favor later
in the frame and eventually held on for the three-point win. UAB, which turned
the ball over 18 times and shot just 17-of-29 at the free-throw line, was
paced by Rod Rucker who tallied 13 points and handed out six assists as all
five starters scored in double figures. Jordan Swing added 12 points and seven
boards, followed by Terence Jones and Robert Williams with 11 points apiece
and Fahro Alihodzic 10 points. After six games Rucker leads the unit in both
scoring and rebounding with 14.7 ppg and 8.0 rpg, but even though he is
hitting his field goals at a 59.0 percent clip, he is still leaving far too
many potential points at the free-throw line where he is just 16-of-32. Swing
and Alihodzic account for 13.5 and 11.0 ppg, respectively.
Troy trailed by one against Alabama State at the break over the weekend, but
in the second half the Trojans were helped along as the Hornets shot just 1-
of-9 behind the three-point line, giving the hosts a small margin for error as
they picked up the four-point win. Emil Jones led the way for Troy as he
tallied 18 points, pulled down eight rebounds, handed out five assists and
made a pair of steals. Antoine Myers and Hunter Williams both dropped in 10
points as well. For Jones, who is the fifth different player to lead the
Trojans in scoring through six games, his 18 points were not only his best
this season, it was also the high-water mark for the entire team to this
point. Jones currently averages an even 10.0 ppg and is first on the unit with
6.2 rpg, which is a sign that he should remain close to the basket instead of
leaking out to the perimeter where he has made just 4-of-15 shots from three-
As a group, the Trojans are shooting only 38.9 percent from the floor this
season, not the sort of accuracy that is conducive to winning, even against
