NCAA Game Summary - Siena at Cornell
(Friday, November 22)
Final Score: Siena 71, Cornell 70
Ithaca, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Imoh Silas recorded a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds to lift the Siena Saints over the Cornell Big Red, 71-70, in a non-conference thriller at the Newman Arena.
Silas shot 6-of-7 from the field and grabbed seven offensive rebounds for the Saints (2-3). Rob Poole led the squad in scoring with 19 points and six rebounds off the bench. Evan Hymes contributed 15 points and Marquis Wright managed 12 points.
Cornell (0-6) received a strong performance from Dwight Tarwater, who registered a double-double of his own with 13 rebounds and 12 points in a losing effort. Nolan Cressler scored a game-high 25 points while Devin Cherry contributed 17 points as the Big Red lost their 12th straight game dating back to last season.
Siena led 43-37 at intermission after an impressive offensive effort in first half as the Saints shot 56.0 percent from the field, 5-of-10 from 3-point range and 10-of-16 from the charity stripe. The Big Red trailed at the break despite hitting on 56.5 percent of their field goal tries in the opening 20 minutes.
In the second half, the Saints shot just 35.0 percent from the floor and went 0-of-6 from beyond the arc. Siena was outscored, 33-28, in the second half. Thanks to a clutch, go-ahead layup from Silas with six seconds left, the Saints were able to hold on for the 71-70 victory as Tarwater's potential game-winning shot just before the buzzer fell off the mark.
Although Siena were not very efficient at the free-throw line, the squad was able to make 24-of-39 attempts compared to a 12-of-24 showing at the charity stripe by Cornell.
