GAME NOTES: Two teams going in opposite directions meet at Trask Coliseum on Wednesday when the William & Mary Tribe face UNC Wilmington in Colonial Athletic Association play.
The Tribe have won three of their last four games, while UNCW has lost 12 in a row and hasn't claimed victory since Dec. 3 against Campbell.
The Tribe won at James Madison Sunday, 81-79, behind 25 points from Marcus Thornton. He went 6-of-9 behind the 3-point line. Also scoring in double figures for the Tribe were Tim Rusthoven with 16 points, Brandon Britt 11 and Omar Prewitt 10 points, to go along with five assists.
William & Mary has made 47 percent of its shots from the field, which ranks first in the CAA. The Tribe also is second in the conference in scoring (73.3 ppg), but hasn't done well guarding as teams are making 46.2 percent from the floor. That's the worst defensive mark in the CAA. On the positive side, the Tribe are first in 3-point field-goal percentage (.402).
Thornton (19.8 ppg) leads the Tribe offensively, while Rusthoven (12.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg) is making 56.3 percent of his shots. That's second-best in the CAA. Thornton has really stepped up over the last four contests (23.4 ppg) and is shooting 53 percent in that span, including 60 percent from beyond the arc. Prewitt (11.5 ppg) provides a spark off the bench for a team that has outscored fellow reserves in CAA play by 18.5 points this season. They've held a scoring advantage in this category over the last 10 games. Julian Boatner leads the CAA in 3-point field goal percentage (.443), while two-time team captain Kyle Gaillard (6.7 ppg) has started every game this season for the Tribe. Terry Tarpey (5.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg) rounds out the starting five.
The Seahawks suffered a 61-50 loss at Drexel Monday. Addison Spruill led all scorers with 22 points for UNC Wilmington, which ranks last in the CAA in shooting (.408). The Seahawks are making just 25.1 percent from 3-point range, also the worst mark in the conference.
Cedrick Williams (14.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg), who was limited to six points on 1-of-12 shooting Monday, leads the Seahawks in scoring. Spruill (10.8 ppg) is the only other player averaging double figures for UNCW, which is scoring only 64.3 ppg. Chris Dixon (7.9 ppg), Freddie Jackson (6.9 ppg) and Shane Reybold (5.9) are the other major contributors for the Seahawks.
Rusthoven is averaging 14.4 ppg vs. UNCW, and there's no reason to think the Seahawks will be able to slow down the balanced offensive attack of the Tribe.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: William & Mary 72, UNC Wilmington 66
