GAME NOTES: The Wright State Raiders try to keep their perfect home record intact, as they host the Green Bay Phoenix in Horizon League action at the Nutter Center on Friday night.
The Raiders have delivered on nine home dates so far this season, but the team is a mere 1-8 in true road outings, which counters almost all of the success the team has enjoyed at the Nutter Center. Nevertheless, Wright State is coming off a 58-53 victory in the building last Sunday versus Illinois- Chicago, the squad's second straight win and the sixth in seven tries overall.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix are streaking along as one of the best overall programs in the Horizon League with a record of 13-3. The team is still undefeated in conference play, thanks to a 93-86 overtime affair versus Milwaukee on the road last Sunday. Altogether, Green Bay has won eight straight and 10 of its last 11 outings.
According to Green Bay sources, the series between these two teams is currently tied at 24-24. Last season, Wright State took both encounters, although the second meeting went to double-overtime before the Raiders came away with the 70-68 triumph on the road.
The teams will match up at least one more time this season, as Green Bay hosts the Raiders in two weeks.
It took some time for Keifer Sykes to warm up, but once he did he headed towards a career-high 34 points as the Phoenix grabbed the win in overtime against Milwaukee at U.S. Cellular Arena. Sykes converted 13-of-28 from the floor, adding eight rebounds and five assists, while Alec Brown filled his stat line with 19 points, nine boards and three blocked shots before fouling out. The same goes for Jordan Fouse with 11 points, nine rebounds and seven dishes, followed by Greg Mays with 11 points for the victors.
In addition to being the leading scorer for the Phoenix with 20.5 ppg, Sykes is also tops in the passing department with 84 assists. Fouse (6.3 ppg) is the leader on the glass with 8.4 rpg, but adding another element to his presence in the paint is Brown (16.2 ppg) who couples his 6.5 rpg with 55 blocked shots for a program that is one of the nation's leaders with 124 rejections, compared to only 54 for the competition.
The Raiders shot a dismal 28.0 percent from the field in the first half and a collective 34.0 percent overall against UIC over the weekend, yet that was still good enough for WSU to come away with the home win. AJ Pacher accounted for 17 points and eight rebounds, doing the majority of his scoring at the free-throw line where he finished 11-of-13. Jerran Young pitched in with 13 points and Reggie Arceneaux 10, the latter shooting just 2-of-8 from the field.
With Pacher being the only player scoring in double figures for the Raiders with his 10.8 ppg, which makes sense since he is the only one to have started every game, you could say the team likes to spread the wealth on offense. No one is playing more than 26 minutes per game and there have been nine different players to appear in the starting lineup for a squad that is generating 68.1 ppg and holding the opposition to just 61.1 ppg, while forcing those programs into an average of 17.6 turnovers per contest.
Both of these teams are having strong years, but even though Wright State seems to have the tougher defense, it will be hard for the Raiders to keep track of all the weapons Green Bay will put on the floor tonight.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Green Bay 68, Wright State 64
