Clemson, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - K.J. McDaniels recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, helping the Clemson Tigers roll to a comfortable 71-57 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks at Littlejohn Coliseum.
McDaniels shot 7-for-12 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line and also posted seven blocks for the Tigers (3-0). Jordan Roper netted 15 points, including 8-of-8 at the charity stripe. Rod Hall added another 14 points.
Mindaugas Kacinas led the Gamecocks (1-2) with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Sindarius Thornwell supplied an additional 10 points.
The Gamecocks had trouble finding much offense in the first half, shooting a dismal 33.3 percent from the field, as well as 1-of-5 behind the 3-point line. The far more consistent Tigers made 12-of-14 free throws and went up 35-26 at halftime.
The Tigers continued to be accurate at the free-throw line during the latter half, sinking all 12 attempts. They also shot 45.8 percent from the field to the Gamecocks' 37.9 percent. Clemson led by as many as 18 points late in the contest.
The Gamecocks shot only 35.4 percent from the field for the game, including an abysmal 1-of-10 from 3-point range. The Tigers' bench accounted for 34 points in a confident victory, opening the season with three wins.
