South Padre Island, TX (Sports Network) - Jameel Grace scored 15 points and pulled down five rebounds, as the Southern University Jaguars held off the winless Florida A&M Rattlers, 64-61, in the third round of the South Padre Island Invitational.
Derick Beltran added 13 points for the Jaguars (2-3), who snapped a three-game skid. Madut Bol and Mike Celestin donated 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Avery Moore ended with 20 points for the Rattlers (0-5). Reggie Lewis tallied 14 points and Yannick Crowder had 12 points and 10 rebounds in defeat.
Trailing by 12, 54-42, with 8:05 to play, the Rattlers made things interesting with a 9-0 run. Moore and Lewis each tallied four points during the surge to get Florida A&M within three, 54-51, with 5:21 remaining.
Moore's three-pointer with 2:36 to go got the Rattlers within two, 58-56. But the Jaguars scored the next four points to take a 62-56 edge.
Florida A&M made it a 64-61 game with 31 seconds left, but missed a three- pointer as time expired.
