GAME NOTES: The Princeton Tigers make their way over to the Keystone State this evening for a matchup against Bucknell Bison as part of regional action of the Legends Classic.
Princeton, which is hitting the road for just the second time this season, is off to just a 1-3 start, that lone victory coming against Buffalo in Jadwin Gym over the weekend by a score of 61-53. On Tuesday the team entertained Elon and bowed to the Phoenix, 56-55.
In the case of the Bison, they were pitted against Minnesota and Vanderbilt on the road to kick off the new season and had to deal with 12-point losses in both, but the team has managed to get back to .500 thanks to wins over Saint Francis (Pa) and, most recently, Marist on Tuesday by a score of 74-68.
The Tigers own a 10-3 lead in the all-time series with Bucknell, taking three of the four meetings played in Lewisburg over the years. Both teams will be back in action over the next two days as they swap opponents between West Alabama and Morehead State.
Princeton trailed by double figures early in the second half against Elon earlier this week, but the Tigers clawed their way back into contention before suffering the one-point setback. Ian Hummer, the leading scorer for the Tigers in three of their four games, was at it again with 18 points, adding nine rebounds, five assists and three steals, but he shot just 5-of-21 from the floor and 8-of-15 at the free-throw line. Douglas Davis chipped in 12 points for a squad that converted a mere 51.7 percent at the charity stripe. Despite being just 56.7 percent accurate at the free-throw line thus far, Hummer is easily the most valuable player on the team as he leads the group in points (17.5 ppg), rebounds (8.3 rpg), assists (12) and steals (eight). Davis is the only other double-digit scorer for the group with his 15.3 ppg, thanks in large part to his 11-of-24 effort behind the three-point line.
Four of the five starter for the Bison scored in double figures in the win over Marist earlier this week as Mike Muscala led the way with 17 points, adding six rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists in 28 minutes of work. Joe Willman tacked on 16 points and seven boards, followed by Bryan Cohen and Bryson Johnson who delivered 14 and 12 points, respectively. For a team that shot 53.2 percent from the floor, Cohen was instrumental in putting teammates in scoring situations as he registered nine of the unit's 16 assists as well. Muscala leads the way after four games with 13.3 ppg and 8.5 rpg and is also tops on the squad with seven of their nine blocked shots, which means before the meeting with Marist the Bison had logged only five total rejections.
Both of these teams are methodic on offense, so taking up most of the clock on many possessions should be expected and that will translate into a low-scoring affair that should be claimed by the hosts.
