GAME NOTES: The Florida A&M Rattlers are hoping the fifth time's the charm as they again go for their first win of the season this afternoon as they tangle with the Southern University in the third round of the South Padre Island Invitational.
The Rattlers have faced some stiff competition in the early going, losing to the likes of Georgia Tech and Providence and most recently Rice, 75-59, as part of this tournament at Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston on Tuesday.
As for the Jaguars, they already have their first win of the 2011-12 campaign, that came in a 67-48 decision against Dillard in the opener. However, since then the team has bowed to Texas A&M, Rice and Providence, although the matchup with the Friars was actually pretty close as Southern lost by just six points on Tuesday, 59-53.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow in the final round of the event, the squads facing off against Western Carolina and Northern Colorado with the matchups to be determined by today's outcomes.
Southern made things very interesting against Providence earlier this week when the visitors held the Friars to just five first-half field goals and 13 total conversions from the floor overall. However, the Jaguars simply let the game get away by allowing the hosts to go to the free-throw line a total of 47 times where they made good on 32 attempts. Southern, which was just 9-of-12 at the charity stripe, was paced by Quinton Doggett who posted 13 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out, while Mike Celestin and Derick Beltran added 18 and 12 points, respectively. The Jags are averaging 60.8 ppg this season as they shoot only 41.2 percent from the floor and 27.6 percent behind the three- point line. Beltran is the top point producer with his 13.0 ppg.
The Rattlers finished with more turnovers (22) than made field goals (21) against Rice this week, the visitors shooting only 5-of-19 behind the three- point line while being outscored at the free-throw line, 26-12. FAMU didn't have a single starter score in double figures, instead it was Avery Moore who posted a game-high 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting beyond the arc. Fellow reserve Jeremy Dean accounted for another 11 points and six rebounds in the setback. Moore, who started the first three games of the season for the Rattlers, is responsible for 13.3 ppg, although his 34.5 percent shooting from the floor is in need of improvement. The other issues with this team are that they are giving up 83.0 ppg and have more than twice as many turnovers (77) as they do assists (37).
In the early games in this tournament both teams were in over their heads for the most part, but the fact that Southern played Providence so tough means that the Jaguars should be more than competitive today.
