GAME NOTES: Two struggling teams attempt to salvage something in 2K Sports Classic sub regional action, as the Navy Midshipmen and Seattle Redhawks square off at the Bren Events Center in Irvine.
The Redhawks have just one win through their first six games at that came against Oregon State last Wednesday, 83-80. The team has since dropped two straight games, with the most recent coming yesterday against sub-regional host UC Irvine, 85-77.
The Midshipmen have been equally inept thus far, with just one win in the first five games. Navy's long victory on the year came at home against Neumann (74-62) last Tuesday. The team has dropped a pair of games since, including yesterday's 80-65 setback to Louisiana Tech.
This marks the first time these two teams have met on the hardwood.
The Midshipmen battled back from a pair of double-digit deficits, but were unable to do it a third time, falling by 15 points to the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs on Saturday. A poor shooting effort sunk Navy, as the team converted just 36.7 percent from the floor, including a miserable 8-of-32 from behind the arc (8-of-32). In addition, Navy was beat up on the boards (41-29) and turned the ball over 15 times. Jordan Sugars led the way with 11 points in the loss. Mark Veazey and J.J. Avila chipped in with 10 points apiece. There hasn't been much to get excited about offensively for Navy, which comes into this game averaging a meager 59.4 ppg. Center Greg Brown currently paces the team in scoring, but at just 12.4 ppg. Sugars is the only other double-digit threat at this time with 10.4 ppg.
Junior Aaron Broussard had a career performance, converting 10-of-16 shots from the floor en route to stat line that included 25 points, nine rebounds and two steals. However, it wasn't enough, as Seattle fell to host UC Irvine as part of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. Alex Jones poured in 19 points and Garrett Lever pulled down 10 rebounds, but the Redhawks shot just 40 percent from the floor in the game, hampered by a horrific performance from behind the arc (4-of-21, .190). Leading scorer, Sterling Carter (18.3 ppg) struggled in the game against the Anteaters, hitting just 2-of-6 shots from the floor and finishing with seven points. Seattle has struggled to find its shot this season, converting just 39.2 percent from the floor, including 27.4 percent from long range. Carter is followed in the scoring column by Jones (12.0 ppg) and Broussard (11.8 ppg), who tops the team in rebounding (9.2 rpg).
One of these teams will finally get back in the win column and it is likely to be Seattle. The Redhawks have the better scoring threats and that should lead to a victory here.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Seattle 74, Navy 65
