Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament Recaps(Monday, March 10th)
Final Score: Norfolk State 78, MD-Eastern Shore 74
Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Pendarvis Williams scored 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds as the Norfolk State Spartans defeated the Fighting Hawks of MD-Eastern Shore, 78-74, in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament at Scope Arena.
Also scoring in double figures for the fourth-seeded Spartans (18-13) were RaShid Gaston and Malcolm Hawkins with 17 points apiece, while Brandon Goode tacked on 12 as he shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor.
The 13th-seeded Fighting Hawks (6-24) were paced by Hakeem Baxter with 21 points and five rebounds, followed by Devon Walker with 16 points as he converted 4-of-7 shots behind the 3-point line on the night. Mark Blackmon came off the bench to chip in 13 points in only 16 minutes, while Troy Snyder added 11 points before fouling out.
Norfolk State started off the meeting on a 9-0 run and led by double figures less than five minutes in, en route to a 43-26 advantage at the break. The Spartans shot a sizzling 61.5 percent from the field through the first 20 minutes of action.
In the second half the advantage reached as high as 23 points at 60-37 with 12:36 remaining. However, the Fighting Hawks refused to back down and used a 35-12 run to knot the score at 72-72 with just over two minutes left in regulation. Unfortunately, after again tying the game at 74-74 with 1:49 on the clock, MD-Eastern Shore went cold and watched NSU close out with four unanswered points at the free-throw line.
In addition to shooting an impressive 54.5 percent from the floor, the Spartans also outscored MD-Eastern Shore at the charity stripe, 25-20.
Norfolk State advances to the quarterfinals on Thursday night where it will take on Savannah State, after the Tigers took down SC State in the late game Monday night, 61-47.
Final Score: Savannah State 61, SC State 47
Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Alante Fenner scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the Savannah State Tigers topped the SC State Bulldogs, 61-47, during the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament at Scope Arena.
Also scoring in double figures for the fifth-seeded Tigers (13-16) were Terel Hall and Jeremiah Hill with 14 and 10 points, respectively, while Jyles Smith pitched in with eight points and 13 rebounds before fouling out.
The 12th-seeded Bulldogs (9-21) were paced by Jalen White with a game-high 19 points, thanks in large part to a 10-of-12 shooting performance at the free- throw line. Unfortunately, White was the only player to score in double figures for SC State in the setback.
The Bulldogs converted a total of just seven field goals in the first half, on 25 attempts, yet trailed by just four points at the break, 28-24. The Tigers were a mere 35.7 percent accurate from the floor through the first 20 minutes as well.
The second half saw SC State shoot only 25.0 percent from the field yet again, just 1-of-7 beyond the arc and 8-of-15 at the free-throw line, more than enough to allow Savannah State to cruise to the double-digit victory.
The Tigers will now take on the Norfolk State Spartans who defeated MD-Eastern Shore earlier tonight in the other opening-round battle by a score of 78-74.
