(Tuesday, December 11)
Final Score: Duquesne 60, West Virginia 56
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Jerry Jones came off the bench to register 16 points to help lead the Duquesne Dukes to a 60-56 win over the West Virginia Mountaineers in non-conference play at CONSOL Energy Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Dukes (6-4) were Derrick Colter and Marvin Binney with 12 and 10 points, respectively, the former adding seven assists and five rebounds in the team's second straight win and the fifth in the last six outings.
The Mountaineers (4-4) were paced by Juwan Staten who tallied 13 points, but shot only 5-of-16 from the floor. Reserves Gary Browne and Matt Humphrey chipped in 10 points apiece as the squad had a three-game win streak snapped.
Both teams had trouble finding the mark from the floor in the first half, but West Virginia managed to move out to a 15-point lead in the period and held a 36-23 advantage at the break as the Dukes missed all eight of their 3-point attempts in the frame.
In the second half the Dukes bounced back with an impressive 53.6 percent accuracy from the floor and it was WVU that had trouble out on the perimeter with just one make in eight tries. However, that one conversion was by Humphrey with about 16 seconds left to play, cutting the Duquesne lead to just three points at 59-56.
With 4.1 seconds remaining and still trailing by three points, the Mountaineers had an opportunity to cut into the deficit at the free-throw line, but following an unintentional miss, the second attempt failed to hit the rim and possession reverted to the Dukes who held on for the victory.
The Dukes picked up the victory despite turning the ball over 14 times and shooting only 3-of-19 beyond the arc.
Duquesne went into the contest having lost eight straight in the series with the Mountaineers.
