GAME NOTES: The Eastern Kentucky Colonels play host to league foe Morehead State this evening. as the pair battle in Ohio Valley Conference action from McBrayer Arena.
Eastern Kentucky stepped out of conference play Tuesday to pick up its second win in three game with a 59-41 decision over visiting Mid-Continent. The Colonels led by eight at the half and distanced themselves with a 10-0 run to start the second half to win going away. EKU struggled from the field overall (35.3 percent shooting) but knocked down 9-of-17 from beyond the arc. Joshua Jones led the way with 15 points while Eric Stutz scored 11.
Morehead State suffered its second loss in three games Wednesday in falling to Jacksonville State at home, 69-55. JSU proved too much for the Eagles, shooting 55.3 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent in the second half. Meanwhile, Morehead State converted on only 43.6 percent of its field goals and committed 17 turnovers. Drew Kelly was high man for the Eagles with 14 points while Ty Proffitt netted 11 as MSU saw its OVC record drop to 6-6.
Eastern Kentucky leads the all-time series with Morehead State by a 104-73 count but the Eagles have captured eight of the last 10 meetings, including a 57-54 win at home January 14. The two teams split their season series last year with Morehead State picking up a 76-68 overtime win at McBrayer Arena.
The Eagles have consistently struggled to put points on the board and rank dead last in the conference with a 62.7-point scoring average. The Eagles shoot just 42.8 percent from the field and allow the opposition to land 44.7 percent of its shots. However, MSU's scoring defense stands second in the league at 63.0 ppg behind only OVC stalwart Murray State. The Eagles have been without their leading scorer Terrance Hill for more than a month now due to a knee injury, leaving Proffitt and Kelly as the club's only real scoring threats. Proffitt checks in at 10.1 ppg and Kelly 10.0 ppg while Marsell Holden leads the team with 55 three-pointers on 37.9 percent shooting and averages 8.2 ppg. Proffitt has buried 44 triples, also on 37.9 percent shooting, while Kelly serves as the team's second leading rebounder with 4.6 per contest. Overall, the Eagles hold down a decent plus-2.3 margin on the glass (31.0-28.7).
The Colonels are paced by senior Jaron Jones, who also sits among the conference's top scorers at 15.9 points per game. Jones is also among the OVC elite in field-goal percentage, connecting on 55.0 percent of his field goals, but is often left to carry the team. Mike DiNunno is the only other double- digit scorer for EKU at 10.2 ppg while Joshua Jones and D'Mitri Riggs do their best to fill the void with 9.9 and 8.6 ppg averages, respectively. Eric Stutz checks in at 8.3 ppg, leads the team in rebounding with 5.0 per contest and sits second to Jones on the roster with a solid 52.6 shooting percentage. Overall, EKU sits in the middle of the pack among its OVC counterparts with 66.3 ppg and a 43.8 shooting percentage. The defense is effective at times, but also unspectacular in surrendering 65.5 ppg and a 45.2-percent shooting clip. One area of serious deficiency is on the boards where the Colonels secure a league-low 29.0 caroms per contest with an inferior minus-4.1 rebounding margin.
Both teams have their issues but the hosts have a superior edge on offense and the Colonels' defense should be able to control any surge by the Eagles.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Eastern Kentucky 62, Morehead State 58
