Final Score: Jacksonville State 55, Southern University 50
New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Stephen Hall collected 13 points and nine rebounds, helping lift the Jacksonville State Gamecocks to a 55-50 win over Southern University as part of the Skip Prosser Tournament at Fogelman Arena.
Tarvin Gaines added 12 points to help the Gamecocks (3-6) snap a four-game slide.
Derick Beltran led all scorers with 20 points to go along with eight rebounds for the Jaguars (3-6), who were coming off a 66-57 win over MacMurray College on Friday night. He was the only scorer in double figures for Southern.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half. However, it was the Jaguars claiming a 21-20 halftime lead as they opened the game with an 11-2 run and held JSU to 8-of-31 (25.8 percent) shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
Southern opened the second half by making seven of its first eight field-goal attempts to build a seven-point lead. But the Gamecocks had the hot hand when it counted most, as they closed the game on a 20-8 run to seal the victory.
JSU forced 20 turnovers for the game and turned those miscues into a key 20-2 advantage in points off turnovers. That proved to be the difference as the Gamecocks were able to overcome a 29.8-percent shooting effort from the floor.
