GAME NOTES: Having recently claimed their first win of the 2011-12 season, the Northern Colorado Bears will try to make it two in a row when they take on the Southern University Jaguars in the final day of the 2011 South Padre Island Invitational.

UNC has opened the year with four straight losses, falling to New Mexico State at home, and at Wyoming, Northern Iowa and Iowa State before settling in yesterday against Western Carolina and coming out on top in a 74-57 final. The Bears are the defending Big Sky Conference regular-season and tournament champs, the latter of which earned them their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

Southern is 2-3 on the young season, and the Jaguars come into today's clash on the heels of Friday's 64-61 win over Florida A&M. It was the first win of the year over a Division I foe though, as their previous victory came over little known Dillard in the season opener. Southern is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Connor Osborne scored 16 points to lead three UNC players in double figures, as the Bears notched their first win of the season in Friday's 17-point rout of Western Carolina in South Padre Island Invitational action. Mike Proctor and Tate Unruh chipped in 10 points apiece for Northern Colorado, which shot 46.6 percent from the field and was nearly perfect at the foul line (15- of-17). Conversely, the Catamounts shot just 32.3 percent from the floor, lost the rebounding battle (43-34), and wasted a monster effort from Brandon Boggs, who scored 35 points and grabbed six rebounds in 33 minutes of action.

Jameel Grace poured in 15 points to lead four players in double figures, as Southern earned a hard-fought 64-61 win over Florida A&M on Friday. Derick Beltran added 13 points, Madut Bol came off the bench to net 11 and Mike Celestin chipped in 10 for the Jaguars, who shot 43.5 percent from the field, which included a 6-of-11 showing from beyond the arc. An 18-8 advantage in points from the charity stripe was an added bonus, as was holding the Rattlers to 37.5 percent field goal efficiency.

Neither team is lighting the world on fire to start the season, but the Bears may have awoke from their slumber with yesterday's big win.
