GAME NOTES: The Charleston Classic will conclude this afternoon for two schools, as the Charlotte 49ers battle the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at the Carolina First Arena.

The Chants were able to get back into the win column on Friday with a convincing, 71-50 decision over USC Upstate. It was the third win on the year for Coastal Carolina, which entered Friday's matchup struck in a two-game slide.

The 49ers were able to claim their second win on the season with a 74-63 decision over East Carolina on Friday. The victory came a day after Charlotte was pummeled by George Mason, 78-56.

In terms of the all-time series between the two programs, the 49ers have won all seven meetings, but the last matchup came way back in 1994. In that contest, Charlotte pounded CCU, 101-72.

The Chants used an 18-2 run down the stretch against USC Upstate, and went on to win by a rather comfortable 21-point margin. Coastal Carolina was not overwhelming in the victory, shooting a mediocre 44.1 percent from the floor, but the team played smart basketball, committing just seven turnovers, while forcing the Spartans into 18 mistakes. Desmond Holloway, who is leading the team with 17.2 ppg, posted a team-high 18 points in the victory, and also grabbed six rebounds. Kierre Greenwood added 12 points, while Anthony Raffa and Chad Gray tallied 10 points apiece. Greenwood has been a solid compliment to Holloway, and his consistency through the early stages of this season (11.2 ppg) has given this team a boost.

After allowing 78 or more points through their first three games, the 49ers finally put together a strong performance defensively, and it paid off, as Charlotte held East Carolina to just 63 points, en route to an 11-point victory. On top of the play defensive, the 49ers also portrayed an offense that saw five different players post double figures. Shamari Spears, who is averaging 17.0 ppg, led the way with 15 points, while Derrio Green posted 14 points, to go along with eight assists and five rebounds. Green is only shooting 29.6 percent on the year, but the guard is still contributing 12.5 ppg. Jamar Briscoe, who is leading the team on the season with 19.3 ppg, tallied 12 points, while An'Juan Wilderness and Chris Braswell chipped in 11 points apiece.

The Chanticleers have never beaten Charlotte, but today might be the day Coastal Carolina achieves that feat. The Chants are playing extremely well and should be able to score against a Charlotte team that has been weak defensively.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Coastal Carolina 83, Charlotte 77
